I want to back up my BIOS, and also be able to review my settings off-
line.

when I tried to save my current BIOS settings it stopped after only
reaching 81%
so i reformatted the floppy; coped afudos over to it and rebooted, but
of course that doesn't work at all.
The MS-DOS is taking up too much room on the floppy.

where am i going wrong?
TIA

Make your bootable floppy and delete all but:

command.com
IO.sys
MSDOS.sys

Then copy your afudos.exe

You now have a bootable floppy that will hold at least several BIOS
files.

after creating a MSDOS boot disk there are 10 files, but none of them
have the filenames you mentioned. I have:
display; mode; ega; ega2; ega3; keyboard; keyb; keyb2; keyb3; keyb4

Ah, well the reason is that in explorer, "folder options", "view", you
have the, "hide system files", box ticked. If you untick it, all will be
revealed Smile

Then just delete all but the ones I mentioned and you should be OK.

If you want to feel safer, you could use the Asus Update which gives you
the option of saving the existing BIOS somewhere and then updating. Bear
in mind that if you do update, you should make a note of the settings in
the existing BIOS.

Good luck.

John

Latest afudos is 2.21 isn't it? Where does 4.1.2 come from in case I've
missed a trick?

Make sure you typed it exactly as per the manual says.

You *may* need to rename the BIOS file to, eg 1234.ROM to get it to work,
where 1234 is the new BIOS number.

So to update, at the command prompt, type:

afudos /i1234.ROM

referring to your question above about missing a trick:
"4.1.2 AFUDOS utility" refers to the section in the ASUS user guide!

No tricks were missed by you, plenty by me.

I guess my next BIOS related adventure will be to confirm i have the
latest ver of BIOS then decide if I want to update.

So the process would be to
1-reboot and write down the BIOS version installed (there is no other
way, correct?)
then
2-visit ASUS site and see what they have, then if it's newer download
and save; then
3-create another boot disk with AFUDOS on it and copy the latest BIOS
over to the boot disk,
then
4-reboot with that disk and run AFUDOS with the i/ (newbios filename).
==
The book says there is an easier way; maybe I'll try that EZ flash.
thanks AGAIN for that 'hidden file' tip; something I actually knew at
one time, but had forgotten; and telling me which were the unessential
files to remove form the boot disk. Cool

I have a8n32 sli motherboard.

As far as I know the ufodos utility or whatever it's called can only
save and load bios rom's... which doesn't contain any settings.

The settings are stored in the cmos ?!

Did you find a way to save and load cmos settings ????

Bye,
Skybuck.

Missed that Smile

You will find it easier to use Asus Update run from Windows. You can note
your existing BIOS number, save the existing and download and install the
new one all from the same program.

But if not then:

> So the process would be to
> 1-reboot and write down the BIOS version installed (there is no

OK

That should work. The new BIOS will probably be zipped, so you will have
to unzip first.

If you are unsure about BIOS settings, go into to BIOS with the existing
bios and note the settings. If you have a DOS capable printer you can
"printscreen", or take a digital photo of each screen.

The EZ flash is really just a quicker way into the afudos method IIRC.

FWIW, I always use the DOS boot and go through the BIOS settings
afterwards. It's easier nowadays as often all the main settings are
retained whereas they used to all go back to default - but not always Wink

I also always use a UPS when doing a flash, just in case. Worth getting
one. In the UK a simple UPS of ~ 400kVA is ~ £35 and well worth having
for mains smoothing and spike removal.

Cheers,

John
