Sorry for the OT post, but the folks in this ng seem to know more about
computer hardware than I see in more specific ng's.
I've got an old Compaq 5062 computer (AMD K6 330 cpu) that had XP installed
on it. I need to go back to 98. The problem is, I cannot get the computer
to boot from the floppy. There's a problem somewhere, and I can't figure it
out. Even in Windows the floppy won't work correctly. Any disk that's
inserted comes up with "The disk is not formatted. Would you like to format
now?" I know the floppies are good. I have changed floppy drives and
cables. The drive is recognized in bios, and it appears to be looking at
the floppy drive first during boot up, but it won't read it. It bypasses it
right to the hard drive and loads Windows.
What might I be missing, and if the floppy bus is bad, what are my options
for getting 98 on this machine?
Thank you,
jm >> Stay informed about: Need help with older computer |

The Windows 98 CD should be bootable.

Check the BIOS setting. Make sure that the A: drive is set to 1.44 MB

1) maybe the heads are mis aligned and any new disk you format on it
will read in it.
2) or may be it is time to spend the few dollars for a new floppy, I am
sure that will not break your bank.
but like Conor said you may be able to boot of the CD drive >> Stay informed about: Need help with older computer |

I appreciate your input, but please notice in my post where I state that I
have changed the floppy drive. In fact, I've tried 3 different ones.

It sounds like you need to format the floppy on that computer. Download the
app to make a bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com chose win98SE OEM and once you
can format a disk then make a new bootdisk.
BIOS must be set to boot A drive first.
Use FDisk to see if XPee might have changed your hard drive to NTFS file
system and if so reconfigure it to FAT32 and then reformat the hard drive.
You will not get Win98 onto a NTFS formatted drive.
Once the hard drive is back to normal FAT32 then you should be able to boot
to the A prompt, put your Win98 CD in the drive and type setup at the A
prompt and it should all fall into place for you. >> Stay informed about: Need help with older computer |
