Post subject: Need help selecting a high quality 19-inch (or bigger) CRT
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>video (more info?)

I have a new desk and I'm now sitting farther from my 17-inch monitor.
This has had me looking for a larger monitor. I have been having
trouble finding a good high quality 19-inch monitor and I could use
some recommendations. Here are my requirements:

Must run 1280x1024 at 85 Hz refresh (for Windows, games will probably
be at 1024x768).
Must have excellent text quality at 1280x1024 (32-bit color if that
matters).
Must have the same text quality in the corners as well as the center
of the screen.
Must have good geometry (should get mostly square).
All of the above must apply when the output is stretched to fill the
entire screen area.
I would prefer a flat screen or close to flat screen (aperature
grille) CRT.
I prefer shadow-masks because they don't have the 2 wires in the
screen that the apperature grilles have. However, if an apperature
grille can meet my text display requirements I will consider using one
at this point.

I'm using a GeForce 4400 Ti card and I have read that perhaps this may
lead to lower quality 2d graphics compared to ATI or Matrox, any truth
to this? At this point, however, I'm not going to spend another $300
to get a comparable video card.

I currently use a 17-inch Samsung 700IFT at 1280x1024 and aside from
some ghosting with blacks next to whites I find the quality to be
excellent.

I have tried:
19-inch Samsung 955DF, it was blurry at 1280x1024 and had terrible
geometry, returned next day.
19-inch Samsung 957MB, text was fuzzy in the corners (colors seemed to
seperate or loose convergence) and it had a terrible "bow" across the
top of the screen that bent the upper corners downward. Returned
after 3 days.

It really seems that there may be a lack of over-all quality in the
current crop of 19-inch monitors based on the reviews I have read.
Most people seem to run at 1024x768 on these monitors and are
unaffected by a lot of the issues. It seems that the LCD market is
getting more attention from the manufacturers.

I will consider spending the extra money to get a 21-inch monitor if
the quality warrants it. I would probably increase my default Windows
resolution to 1600x1200. I don't want to have to return the 21-inch
because I will probably have trouble transporting it (will have to
remove it from the box to get it into my car). So I will need to be
very confident in the quality.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I completely agree. Hitachi made the best tubes and they no longer do
so. That leaves Samsung as the "leader" in CRT's, but they were never
as good as Hitachi.

Look for one of the Hitach Superscan 752 monitors on eBay or the KDS
KD-1911 (also called the VS-195e). Both are over 2 years old, but
have that killer Hitachi 19" tube. Razor sharp text and great
graphics. I'm sure there are others, but I only have experience with
those two models. Geometry is a hit or miss. Sorry, but anything
over 17" in a conventional CRT will have geometry problems.

Oh, one more thing. Get rid of that crappy nVidia GeForce. If you
want good 2D and text, get an ATI or Matrox.

Well a good flat shadow-mask is ideal but I'm not having much luck finding one.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I'm not totally opposed to LCDs. I do play FPS games quite often and
I'm a bit concerned about refresh speeds with those games. I'm aware
of the new Hitachi with the 16ms response time but the reviews didn't
seem all that fantastic overall. The majority seem to be 25ms
response and seem excellent in almost every way. I would be looking
at a 19", I'm just a bit worried about gaming on it. I'm not a super
twitchy FPS gamer and I play mostly DoD. Any thoughts on using one of
these? I still might game at 1024x768 for speed and so I could read
the text (gets too small at 1280x960 on many games).

I'm aware of the scaling issues. I have seen a 19" Dell (based on the
samsung 191T I believe) look very good at non-standard resolutions in
Windows. This was running Windows XP which I believe has some
additional scaling support. I run Windows 2000 however and I didn't
try any games on this PC. I was thinking the scaling might not be
much of an issue in games but I could understand how it might get
blurry. Anyone have any experience with a 19" LCD in games? I have
been looking at the Samsung 191T in particular.

Take a look at the Iiyama VM Pro 454. As far as I can tell Iiyama are not
as big a name in the US as they seem to be in the UK. The 454 can do some
ridiculously high resolutions (2048x1536) and actually is sharp up to about
1792x1344. It's by far the best monitor I've ever seen.

It's aperture grille, but really the wires are very fine. You notice them
when you're working on a white background but if you're not looking for
them, you'll never even notice them against the windows background / on
webpages. During gaming / watching videos you can't find them even if you
look.

For sharpness 85 Hz always seems to be the best, but it will do 1280x1024 at
160 Hz, which gives an incredibly stable image. One minor disadvantage is
you don't get a warning your mobile's going to ring - most other monitors
flicker quite nastily just beforehand Smile

I'd use monitorsdirect.com . They seem to have all the answers.

Good shadow masks are not flat. The very technology of a CRT is
curved. If you force them to be flat, you will get even worse
geometry problems. Unfortunately, the public is demanding perfectly
flat monitors, which is pushing out shadow mask in favor of trinitron
(yuck) or LCD's (double yuck). This happens all the time. The public
favors one characteristic at the expense of another. For years, I
would much rather have my razor sharp Matrox card over a super fast
blurry nVidia.... but I digress....

A flat glass isn't that important, as long as the image behind it is
straight. Don't get hung up on it.

It's a pity that you won't find it at all... Sad

Avoid Samsung (you know what I am talking about)... It'd be nice that you go
with Hitachi, but it's impossible to find it... Sad

If you can get some second-hand CM772, it's be nice... Also, look for
Silicon Graphics monitors that have Hitachi EDP tube...

My man!! Smile Aperture grill and LCD = YUCK! Smile)

BTW., tell people to search for EIZO F-series too... It's Nanao on USA
market... I have F55S (4 years old), and it still has got crisp text!! I'll
look for some models that are availible today... Nope, no new models in

I'm glad we agree on our monitor choices. Shadow mask Hitachi CRT's
were the best ever made.

I just bought a KDS VS-195e and Hitachi 751 (both Hitachi 19" tubes)
off eBay as spares.

A pointed question on this . . . anyone have any experience with the
NEC MS97F? Shadow mask 19 in . . . dirt cheap in Canada. I was
contemplating NEC FP912SB but this one is available locally and much
cheaper.

It's not plain shadow mask... If NEC, then it uses NEC's own Cromaclear(TM)
tube... Very good tube... But, from my experience, there are a lot of
problems with older monitors which use this tube... These tube get 'tired'
too fast... Sad

Well ... if you're happy with your 17", perhaps there's a simple fix for
your new desk ... for example, just moved my monitor to a "new" desk that's
a bit low ... a coupla blocks under the legs et voila, I can get my knees
underneath and therefore closer to the monitor. But ... maybe you got the
new desk in to justify a new monitor Smile
