I'm planning to upgrade my system a bit at a time over the next few months,
as I'm still running my BH6 mobo with a celery 1100. I'm haven't yet made a
final decision about my choice of mobo and CPU, but I want to start with a
new PSU, since I can use it in my current system right away. Who knows...it
may even prove to be the solution to some recent stability issues I've been
having.
What I'm looking for:
- Rock-solid, steady performance
- Quiet operation
I've done google searches for high-quality, quiet PSUs, but all of the hits
seem primarily concerned with the quiet aspect, and don't talk much about
quality. Is there a consensus as to which quiet power supplies are of the
highest quality?
Thanks in advance.

I beg to differ. The primary source of noise seems to be _small_ fans, like
north bridge coolers, video coolers and hard drive coolers.
CPU coolers are sometimes noisy too, but retail HSFs are usually pretty
quiet -- at least Intel's retail HSFs.

PC Power & Cooling makes the Silencer series which are very solid and
reliable. Antec, Enermax and Sparkle/Fortron are other good brands. You're
right, a generic power supply is often a source of system instability,
especially when overclocking.

WD's -BB, -JB and Raptor drives aren't what I'd coin "whisper quiet" -
especially if you have more than one drive in a RAID set, etc..
Seagate drives are pretty nice, and I hear the Maxtor drives are
pretty quiet too, though I've not personally used one in a few years.

Yes thats the first step is to replace those whiners with 80 mm fans.
Thermalright makes some great heatsinks for 80mm fans and the right case
will have 80mm fans blowing on the hard drives, the video card is a problem
though.

Anandtech did a good review on power supplies
Personally I like the Antec tru or the solution series.

most of the "quiet" power supplies are actually fortrons with a different
fan. those forton based PSUs and the seasonics are the best of the quiet
PSUs.

Try getting a new case with the fan. The ANtec Sonata is a slick case and PS
(380w). The case is very quiet and has good review. No more noise issues

Fortron is excellent, as is Sparkle/SPI. The best of the best though
is PC Power and Cooling, they're the only supplies I've ever tested
that never dropped the +5 and +12v rails below +5.00 and +12.00v
regardless of load changes. Super steady. The same can't be said
for Enermax, or even Antec.

I haven't come across many *inaudible* hard drives in a couple of years...
Maybe quiet at first, but they all seem to start to whine after a few
months. My system is almost silent when I start it up with the HD's
unplugged. I'm running a pair of Samsung Spinpoint 80's in a RAID 0, so I
can't get either replaced under warranty without a re-install, and that's
just too much hassle to contemplate.
At my work, I reckon about 50% of the desktops have the same noisy drive
problem. And so do a few other PC's in my family/friend circle. It can't all
be bad luck...
