My uncle Ron is poised to buy a pocket digital camera. the Canons look as
good as any?

but is it worth paying out for the image stabiliser for those low light long
distance shots, or is the image stabiliser an expensive gimmick? thanks
for any advice.

On my digital camera the image stabilized lens allows you to gain about
three stops, ie if you can hand hold at 1/60 sec with the relevant zoom then
you can now hand hold at 1/15 sec using image stabilization.
