I learn something new almost every day!

I just put together a P4VGM with a Celeron 2.8 for my daughter. (love those
rebates)
That is one tiny CPU too! Wink
New Soyo case with power supply, mouse, speakers and keyboard. (love those
rebates)
Centon PC2100 256mb ram (love those rebates)
New CPU fan
Old Maxtor 2.5 gig (just for the moment)
Win XP (just testing the system out with it)

I tried to boot it up the first time, got power light, fans coming on, but
no beeps nor video! Back to sticking my head in the manual and rechecking
the connections. Then removing the MB and any unnecessary wires going to
it. Then trying a few different video cards................nothing.
I hooked up the long power lead, but guess what I didn't hook up the first
time. <Surprised) lol
IMHO That MB manual sucks!!! Smile
NO WHERE in the manual does it say to hook up that OTHER power lead! Or I
missed seeing it several times.
While surfing for answers on the internet I possibly saw the problem.......2
power leads!
After installing the square power lead, it came to life and I experienced no
other problems. Smile

Now my question is...........what is the largest hard drive this MB can
accept?

TIA,
dave
BTW my daughter likes it. I had set it up so she saw it working with her
favorite game on it when she woke up this AM. A happy surprise for her and
now she doesn't need to use mine!!!!! <BG>

Well the P4VGM is a new motherboard so you should have no problems
installing a large capacity hard drive (over 137 gig)on this system.
As to the manual, there is no manual for this motherboard, only a
quick start guide and yes they don't have much information in them.
It's one of the biggest complaints I have with Soyo. Later they will
come out with a manual and it will only be avalible on the web site
(but it's not there yet). But the quick start guide does make a
reference to using a P-4 ATX 12V compatible power supply and that
difference between it and a normal ATX power supply is that little
four pin square connector that must be used with the P-4 and P-4 based
Celerons. But if you have never built a P-4 based system how are you
to know? The first time I saw a Soyo motherboard come without a manual
was with the original P4I-845PE and I've had many people ask me why
they sell boards with only a quick start guide my reply, there getting
to cheap to include one

Hmmm
I did think I was crazy when I read that tiny "Quickie" manual and did not
see clear instructions. lol
I prefer manuals that are a little more for the newbies, newbies that don't
build computers on a regular basis.
A manual on there CD would be fine too. Oh and BTW the layout in the manual
is slightly different than the actual layout too!

thanks for all the info Jim B.
My daughter is really testing it out to make sure it is working well and she
likes it enough to stay off of mine. I will pick up a larger drive for it
as she starts wanting more programs on it. Wink

later,
dave (still learning!)

While you're at it, there's a newer BIOS version for it already. Mine
came with a BIOS date form October 2003, but there's a version date from
May this year. However...now how do I flash the BIOS on a computer
without either DOS nor a floppy drive installed? Many a time I flashed
Asus boards with their flash utility for Windows, without any hitch
ever. A Soyo BIOS flash program that doesn't require DOS or a floppy
drive would be greatly appreciated.
(In Photoshop, when sliding a portion of a transparent picture around,
the whole system locked up on me twice! Can't be lack of RAM, 512 MB, or
lame videocard, 64 MB 4xAGP MX440.)

I guess that I will flash the bios ONLY when needed.
I just hope the SOYO power supply is good enough for this P4VGM board.
Since I saw what a 'weak' PS can do to my AMD-based computer I use a better
power supply with that one.
The cheap (AMD recommended) PS caused crashes quicker than a better power
supply while I was having RAM problems. Since the defective RAM was changed
no more problems.

I might be mistaken but I think that the Intel boards don't demand as much
from the power supply as the AMD boards, but maybe your PS is a little on
the weak side or a defective RAM module?

One would assume that 320W should be enough. I think I've narrowed it
down to the low-cost Celery CPU, with its meager 128kB Level2 cache.
For the record: buyers beware! There are two different versions of the
Soyo P4VGM. One is called "P4VGM", the other one "P4VGM version 1.0".
The latter does support Prescott CPUs (1MB cache), while the former does
NOT. IMHO, this naming convention constitutes fraud and while I'm not
quite pissed off enough to pursue any kind of legal action, I am
certainly angry enough at having been misled, that I will neither buy
any kind of Soyo hardware in the future, nor will my shadow ever darken
the doorsteps of Quadra Technology in Marshall, Texas again.
