I have an abit IS-7. The cd it comes with has audio drivers, lan drivers, chipset drivers and RAID drivers. I installed the
first 3, but not the RAID driver because I only have 1 hard drive. I saw on abits site there is another driver called Abit
Sata Installation Disk v1.33. Do I need to install this to get maximum performance from my SATA hard drive?

A little about my system:
Abit IS-7
P4 3.2E
1 gig PC3200
GF 6800 GT
160 GB SATA
IDE DVD-ROM
IDE DVD-RW
WinXP Home w/SP1

My XP cd has SP1 already installed, and it picks up my sata drive right off the bat. But there must be some reason there is
that driver available on abits site. Do I need it?

Also, I also see Intel Application Accelorator, what does it do and would it make my system faster?

that depends on the mode that the controller is running in. the Intel SATA
can run in an enhanced IDE mode or in raid mode with the raid ROM enabled or
raid mode with the raid ROM disabled. if the raid mode is enabled in the
bios, even with only one drive, then you would need the drivers as far as I
am aware. this would be true with raid ROM enabled or not.

Why would I turn on RAID mode when I only have one drive tho?

Because enabling RAID mode disables the (annoying) port shadowing "feature",
freeing up all six (parallel and serial) ATA ports on the board. Most
importantly though, enabling the RAID part of the controller also enables
the PCI bypass feature, which increases performance, even in a single drive,
or dual drive, non-RAID scenario.

So the two options are RAID and HAMSTRUNG?

That's being a little obtuse. Intel were obviously trusting the people who
buy their boards to know how best to configure them for their own specific
uses. The ICH5R is designed to fit a wide variety of products at a wide
variety of target pricepoints and users. It goes without saying that it
needs to be a versatile device.

Selecting RAID mode gives the best out and out performance and the greatest
level of functionality to the board, yes. However the normal/enhanced modes
variously free the system from needing an extra driver, free up an IRQ, give
an additional element of forward compatibility in addition to legacy OS,
application and hardware support, and allow a reduced feature set to be
easily and neatly configured.

All are scenarios that will be needed by customers (be they system
integrators or end users) at some point, so if your intention was to make
some sort of criticism of either Abit or Intel for not locking the
controller into "non-hamstrung" mode in the first place, such criticism
ain't justified.
