I will soon upgrade my K7S5A and I will replace my 2x256MB of PC133 CL3
memory with 2x512MB PC2100 DDR
I wonder, Can I install some PC2700 DDRCL2.5 memory instead of PC2100 and
run it at PC2100 CL2?
I have heard that some peoples were sucessfull in running PC2700 at PC2100
CL2
I want to upgrade for many reasons: My K7S5A has the SDRAM stability
problem.
I want to have the extra speed since my PC133 CL3 has to run at "Normal"
speed in order to be stable, I am certain that the DDR memory will make even
a greater impact! (faster memory, lower CL, faster transfert)
Finally, I will probably buy the memory in a local shop in Canada but I am
looking at Crucial and they might be cheaper, any opinions there?

You can certainly use either PC2700(166MHz) or PC3200(200MHz) at 133MHz on
the K7S5A. I'd suggest going with the PC3200 for the small cost premium
involved. A 512MB module of Crucial or Micron original PC3200 is about
$145CND.

Best Buy had a terrific rebate on Crucial Memory that ran from
27Jul2003 to 2Aug2003. 512mb DDR PC2100 that Best Buy retailed for
$159.99 had a $105.00 instant rebate at time of purchase, and a $15.00
mail in rebate; so your actual cash outlay at the time of purchase was
only $54.99 per 512mb memory module, and then with the $15.00 mail in
rebate the end cost of a 512 mb memory module of Crucial DDR PC2100 was
$39.99. I couldn't pass that deal up, and bought two 512mb memory
modules. I pulled out the original 512mb SDRAM PC133 memory module, and
replaced it with the two new Crucial memory modules.
Although this particular rebate offer ended, keep an eye out for
near future similar Crucial rebate offers or sales by Best Buy. This
was the first Crucial memory offer that I got in on. They had other
similar offers prior to this offer, and they probably will have more.
Since I will not overclock this computer, I got the DDR PC2100
memory, plus the price was extremely good.

I also did that Best Buy deal on 2 DDR PC2100 512mb sticks.
As you say Best Buy has these Crucial offers from time to time.
Last year on Labor Day 256mb of DDR PC2100 was $35.00 after rebates.
Back in Dec.'01 the same 256mb of DDR PC2100 was $25.00 after rebates.
These deals have been less than half normal price each time.
BTW, my 2 512mb dimms are running fine at 138Mhz front side bus.

I had problems installing 2 sticks of SDRAM (instability). Fixed it by
installing a recent HoneyX bios and clocking to 138Mhz. Something wierd

I also have problems while using two stick of sdram, but only when I am
playing a graphic intensive game like Q3.

I will try to install the HponeyX bios and I will check the stability at
138mhz
In the original Bios, the memory timing speed can be set at "safe" "normal"
"fast" "fastest"
I an currently using "normal", what speed are you using ?
The DDR upgrade will have to wait a few month so I will be working to try to
stabilize the current setup
