I just purchased a usb 2.0/firewire external hard drive. when I first
plugged it in, it basically froze. I tried to view an avi file off of
the drive and i viewed about 2 fps. I installed an external
firewire/usb 2.0 card but had the same problem. I am running xp sp2
and updated all the drivers. Any ideas? Tx.

i have/had a sy-kt600 ultra platinum and just replaced it with a sy-kt880. i had the same problem with getting my western digital firewire/usb2 120g hd/encloser to work on it too. once in a while it would had a drive letter but couldn't read any info on the drive. mostly it just wouldn't load the drivers correctly. i had the front bay one box installed in another rig so i couldn't try the firewire. i may do a bench setup on the kt600 and see what happens with the firewire but i figure i'll have the same results as you.

whether a fresh install of windows would solve the problem is just another option.

i just plugged it in on the kt880 and as with my other rigs, it works.

see if you get any where with this. plug in the external unit. if it reacts anything like what i've seen and shows an driver error in the device manager. try disabling the usb2 root hub or via enchanced host controller. the drive should then install the driver and be assigned a drive letter in explorer on it's own without rebooting.

why, i have no idea. whether that helps you or not is an unknown also. might give you some where to look.
