I have a maxtor 120gb HD that has been going down--but only the system
(first) partition. I have restored it several times using partimage on
knoppix. But I'm giving up on it.

I have on old drive that I am going to use for my system drive. What I
am wondering is that if the second partition on the original drive
hasn't failed yet, is it a bad idea to kep my docs/media files where
they are (on partition 2) and just use another drive for the system
drive?

The previous posting comes up when I do the report.

Having said that I didn't even notice that I don't get anything when I
click on SMART (or ATA for that matter). All the other subgroups under
starage (windows storage, logical drives, optical drives, aspi) display
information.

Yeah, it appears you have the drive on a plugin PCI controller card.

Why are you doing it like that ?

What happens when the first partition has a problem ?
Its possible that the drive itself if fine and its the PCI
controller card that is screwing the data on the first partition.

Basically programs stop working because files have weird names, and
soon the computer won't boot at all. At first I thought it was a
virus. But before this happened 6-8 times I had previously gotten one
virus since I bought my first PC in '94.

The drive is connected IDE to the motherboard. I went ahead and bought
another drive and successfully got everything on there using partimage.

FYI- I still dont get a SMART report using this drive, but it is
definitely connected to the motherboard.

I'll let you (everyone) know how it goes.

Wierd. Try the knoppix CD and smartctl from the
command prompt. That should show the SMART data.

Thats not good news in some ways, that means that
the corruption you are seeing in the file names etc is
most likely due to a flakey motherboard controller.
Might be a flakey logic card on the original drive tho.

I'd definitely try a new ribbon cable, mainly because that is cheap.

Yes please.
