I'm looking for a nice 4 megapixel camera, something along the lines of
the Canon S400 series. A very important feature for me is to be able to
control it from my laptop while it's on a tripod, to take multiple
exposures at different fstops/times, *without* having to touch the
camera (hence the laptop connection).

Any suggestions?

Do you know if the S400 allows this also? I like the smaller size of it,
but if I had to I could go with the G2/g5.

According to my S400 Owner's Manual it has what it calls
"PC connected Shooting" and the description:
"Available (USB connected only. Exclusive software
program 'RemoteCapture' is included in the camera kit)"
Page 149.
Apparently it is part of the ZoomBrowser EX software that
came with my camera. I haven't installed that software.
This would be a direct (USB) connection to your PC from
the camera. Not an IR remote connection that comes with
the G series of Canon cameras ....

Jack, do you know if it lets you change the exposure via USB/computer also?

if i remember correctly the remote capture software that came with the
camera did not operate correctly so i had to do an upgrade from the canon
website
this created a completely new set of software which works very well

the canon remote capture software allows you to take pictures while
connected to my laptop with settings to alter ---
white balance
flash off/on
macro off/on
size & quality
exposure compensation
rotation
zoom

You mention "something along the lines of the Canon S400 series". The Canon
S-400 has this feature. Why not look at it?
