Post subject: memory prob. with xp Pro????
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>soyo (more info?)

I cannot manage to get XP installed on this board (all other compnents
OK) but can install 98, etc.

MS is no real help. The main prob. is that it will not copy all the
files from the CD to the HD. It usually refuses to copy over about 12
or so files. I am using 512MB PC3200 DDR Ram w/Heatsink 400Mhz. I do
not know the brand, but it seems to be fine with win 98.

It was MS that suggested it was a memory probelm/ I have tried
everything I can think of, any help?

Thanks...

Download a copy of Memtest and run it for a few hours. See if any
errors come up. Soyo motherboards are well known for being very picky
on memory. Your best off with high quality memory. Also it would be a
great help if you posted all the information about your system, list
the board, cpu, hard drive and optical drive configurations, power
supply output,Dimm slot used for memory, and anything special like RAID
arrays or added PCI cards. Even which version of XP.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

You do not mention if the XP is the upgrade version, or the Full
version, but have you tried having XP completely remove the old
windows and install it as a new install?

Are you using an original CD or is it a copy of the XP cd? It could be
a bad copy?

Have you tried cleaning the CD drive?

Another suggestion is to go into the BIOS and make some changes. I do
not recall from memory which setting, but there is one that will load
all the "conservative" settings. Also, you do not say, but if you
have the hard drive(s) connected on the raid (IDE 3/4) try placing it
on IDE 1.

Another thing you need to do is to remove all cards except for the
video card. All you should have is the Hard drive, a cd drive and
maybe a floppy and video card. I would even remove the sound card, if
possible.

Then try installing Windows XP. If this works, then you can add the
cards one at a time.

Also, be sure and go to all your hardwares' web pages and download the
newest drivers and place these on floppies BEFORE trying to upgrade.

Check the documentation about RAM location. If you have 3 slots
(o,1,2) place the ram into slot 2 (last)

Also, check the board's web page to see what RAM is recommended by
SOYO for your particular board. I'd tried using Corsair on mt KT333
Ulta Black board, but found out I needed Crucial (the recommended ram)

Can you post more information about the model nmber of your board and
what peripherals you have? Your RAM should have a brand name on it.
What XP version are you using?
