Upgrading to AMD XP 2800 Barton on (possibly) an Asus A7N8X Delux Mobo and
512 Mb mem
I'm not a gamer.
Currently looking a something like the MSI GeForce FX5600
I'd be glad of comments/advice/opinion ref a decent graphics card.
Thanks.

For my money a GF4Ti 4200 128meg card or a ATI 9600/9600pro card. pro is
better, and I _think_ you can also get a form for a free copy of
HalfLife 2 whenver it comes out.

The Half-Life 2 voucher only comes with the 9600 XT and 9800 XT cards. The
9600 XT would be a good choice card.

No it doesn't. On E-Buyer, the Sapphire 9600 cards have the voucher.

The fan on my Ti4200 was buzzy and unpleasant after only a few weeks use. I
replaced it with a Zalman heatpipe cooler ZM80A-HP which works splendidly
and is totally silent. No problems with overheating even when maxed out
gaming online. This on a Barton xp2500 system slightly overclocked.

THe GF4 Ti is quiet as is the 9600 XT. Not sure about the pro though.

Ok, many thanks all - am slowly coming to the conclusion I don't need such
an advanced card - something like a NvidiaFX5200 or Radion9200 would
probably suffice.
Thanks again.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

If you're not a gamer, then why not consider a GF4 MX?
Quite a few are fanless and $50 or less.

I have the stock 9600 on a P4 system and could not be happier. Solid and
stable in my configuration.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Dave, you can get a licensed version of the 9200 (that is, not an
ATI-branded version) for around $60 or so. An ATI 9200 goes for around $100.
For that money you could get an ATI 9600 on eBay (that's what I did). For
that price it's a way better card than the 9200.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Tony, novice question - does the 9600 have a fan? Would you know if the
standard 9200/5200 have fans=probable additional noise?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
