Maybe.
Since you have a copy of the firmware, if you get a hold of a copy of
mktflash, you might be able to force a flash of the flash-rom. It's
how people overclock liteon cdrw drives, so it should be easy to find.
Don't know if it will work for the DVD drive, but I suppose it's worth
checking out.
