I am getting ready to upgrade my system. I am looking for an Asus
mobo, with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU (perhaps Quad core, but probably
not).
Anyways, I tend to stick with Intel Chipset mobo's.
Anybody know if Nvidia's nForce chipset is any good? Slow/fast, stable,
etc.. ?
All the Asus mobo's I've seen that have an Intel Chipset, support Intel
Core 2 Duo CPU's tend to be older mobo's from earlier this year or last
year, which simply have had a BIOS upgrade to add support to these
CPU's.
I am looking for a newer mobo, and price is no object.
Any body have any good recomendations?
I've checked out the Asus site, but there is nothing new I've seen
there lately. Anybody know if Asus is coming out with a new crop of
mobo's in the next few months?
I intend to purchase an Nvidia 8800 GTX video card with whatever mobo I
get, but I am not doing SLI, so I do not care if the second PCI Express
slot does 16x or not. >> Stay informed about: What Asus mobo to buy for Intel Core 2 Duo CPU? |

I recently built a Conroe system on an Asus P5W DH Deluxe (Intel 975x
chipset). To be honest I'm not impressed with the built quality and
from what I've read at various places I'm probably not alone.
I think if I had it to do over again I'd look at the Intel BadAxe or
BadAxe2 (http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/bx2/bx2_available.htm).

The P5B-E, P5B Deluxe or P5W-DH are the top Asus choices.
The Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 is also a solid choice. And the Intel Bad Axe
is a good choice.

Let me preface this by saying I don't hate my board or Asus. Right now
it's working fine for me. Every motherboard I've used has had issues
and bugs so I didn't expect perfection. I'd still put this board high
on my consideration list if I were shopping today and knowing what I
know, but it wouldn't be on the top of the list.
For example, my MB temps, which on this board come from the
southbridge, were very high. If you do some reading you'll find that
this is pretty common with this board. So I removed the SB heatsink and
found that the thermal "concrete" which was applied to the bottom of
the heatsink on was only touching the chip in two thin strips on two
ends of the chip. I lapped the sink and applied new thermal compound
and brought my temps way down. Then I added a fan for even better
cooling, but a better heatsink with better application would have been
enough without a fan.
The northbridge just got new thermal compound and a fan. I really think
this northbridge heatpipe is gimicky. The cooling end of the pipe sits
on the voltage regulators which doesn't seem optimal, but I'm told they
don't get that hot, so maybe it's fine.
Another gimmick is the use of those shroud things with logos on the
heatsinks which everyone rips off (as did I). It's not a big problem to
remove them, but do you void your warranty in doing so? I would have
preferrred not to have had to do that.
Another problem I had was the dreaded hang at 32 minutes on install,
which others have reported. I was able to complete the install with a
forced restart (or maybe two).
There are other issues, some of which I'm not sure I can categorize as
build quality isssues, poor design or just bugs in the BIOS. For
example, people are reporting that Vista won't load with a second PCI
card installed (I'm not exactly clear on whether they mean the PCI-e
plus another PCI card or two PCI cards) and that it won't load with
most TV tuner cards--Vista supported ones. Granted Vista isn't
officially out yet, so hopefully this will be fixed, but what if it
isn't? Do I get $20 and the joy of making some lawyers rich in a class
action lawsuit 5 years from now?
Then there's the issue where tRFC (which isn't user adjustable) appears
to be set too agressively if you use manual RAM timings. There are
reportedly stability issues with dividers, etc.
The SATA stuff just seems very kludgy, to me, as well. Maybe it's fine.
I don't run and SATA drives at the moment, but I read a lot of
complaints.
You can (and probably should) take all of this with a grain of salt.
Some are mainly overclocker's issues which may not be relavent to most
people, but the cooling problems could shorten the life of the board.
I'd suggest reading the Ausus P5W DH forum and the xtremesystems.org
forum to get an idea of problems people are having.

Hi, well my P5W DH build quality is fine, whatever that means. Installing XP
was doddle, just need to know how to setup the drives, like any other
motherboard it. It overclocks fine and is as stable...

Thanks guys for all the info.
I had looked at the Asus P5W DH mobo and it looks pretty good.
Althought this thing about a possible problem when running Vista and a
second PCI (or PCIe?) board being plugged int does concern me. My plan
is running an Nvidia 8800 GTX and a PCI Creative Labs X-Fi sound card.
Since at some point next year, I plan on running Vista, I do want to
make sure this stuff will work!
Another thing, this may sound silly (probably is), but one of my
concerns is that as far as I can tell, all of the currently available
Asus mobo's that support Core2 Duo CPU's came out about 6-7 months ago.
I could have the timing wrong, but isn't that before Core2 Duo CPU's
shipped?
A lot of Asus's boards in the past few months have BIOS upgrades to
allow the boards to use Core2 Duo CPU's, and that makes me wonder, if
these boards are just being patched to support the new CPU, are there
going to be performance issues as compared to some brand new board
coming out that was designed from the ground up for Core2 Duo support?
As for the Nvidia 680i, again I would prefer an Intel chipset solution,
but thanks for the info on the Nvidia chipset. I will take a serious
look at that as well.

Dear Todd,
using Newegg's search, looks like there are 36 boards that fit your most
basic criteria, C2D compatible and intel chipset:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=Property&Subcateg...=280&De
> I am looking for a newer mobo, and price is no object.
Feel free to adopt me. In the interim, we can eliminate all the "value"
models. That leaves about 8 in the first cut.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductCompare.asp?bop=AND&Submit=PROPER...SubCate
Foxconn got some pretty harsh reviews, including a fire. Let's avoid that.
Leaves these four: Barry's Gigabyte, the P5W, and the Intel Bad Axe 1
and 2.
Reviewer's scores: (%)
A B C D F
Gigabyte: 70 22 4 4 0
P5W 63 16 9 6 6
Bad Axe 1 70 20 8 1 2
Bad Axe 2 83 17 0 0 0
But only 6 votes so far for BX2.
Based on above trends, must vote for Bad Axe--looks to be the more solid
975X based board.
But, don't forget Asus' two WS boards:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductCompare.asp?Category=20&N=2010200...+107131
P5W 64 WS 67 17 17 0 0
Only 6 votes....
P5WDG2 88 12 0 0 0
Only 8 votes.
"Quad core compatible according to Asus".
The Asus Striker board, with some reviews. I think you prefer Intel
chipsets for Intel CPUs, and I tend to agree....
http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustratingReview.asp?item=N82E16813131074
Recommend: Bad Axe 2 or one of the Asus WS boards.

The OP prefers to go with Intel. Personally I would have no problem
recommending them, but I don't have any experience with nvidia chipsets
for Intel processors. I was quite happy with my nvidia based AMD
boards, though.

OP may have "tended to stick with Intel chipsets," but he asks
specifically about nVidia's chipset. That's why I responded as I did.
Read the article on Anandtech. They give the 680i-based board the nod
OVER Intel P975 and 965-based motherboards. This nVidia chipset has
features that will knock your socks off, such as an automatic
fine-tuning process during which it reboots itself with multiple
settings until it determines the optimum setting for overclocking
stability. The ability to control almost all BIOS settings from
within the operating system seems as though it may have the capability
of demystifying some of the more arcane ones.
At this point in time, I would strongly recommend that one not buy an
Intel-chipset board without at least pausing long enough to find out
as much as possible about the 680i-based alternatives.

I just built a system using the P5W DELUXE with Conroe E6700, 4 Seagate
Barracuda 500 giggers in a RAID10(0+1) array, and after first upgrading
BIOS to 1407, have had no issues. In Sisoft Sandra, it spanks everything
but the E6800 proc machines. A thread in ASUS forums states the MOBO
temp sensor has been moved to the hottest section of the board and
acceptable temps for the board are 40-65 degrees. My proc runs 35-40 @
idle, 45 under 100% load (running SETI@home), but I have seen it hit 55
deg. under very heavy load. So far I am very satisfied.

It sure is. The best price I can find is $300, but OP stated, "I am
looking for a newer mobo, and price is no object."
