Post subject: New motherboard, new problem
Archived from groups: alt>comp>hardware (more info?)

My old motherboard and power supply suddenly died Friday. A local shop
replaced both today. When I got home, the computer started up just fine into
Windows XP, I surfed the net, updated Quicken, etc. Then, after about 45
minutes, as XP was downloading some updates from Microsoft, the machine
suddenly crashed and started to reboot itself.

Except it couldn't get back into Windows. I tried safe mode, etc., but no
go. I kept ending up back at the page where it asks which choice I'd like to
prefer, restart Windows normally, etc. No choice worked.

I then tried to do a repair reinstall, but that won't work: deep into the
process I keep hanging up on message that says: "The procedure entry point
GETIUMS could not be located in the dynamic link library MSStart.dll."
There's no way around it.

Bottom line: Do I need to just start over by reformatting the C:\ drive and
making a clean install of XP? Or does this sound like something I should
take back to the shop?

All all of my data is either backed up or located on another partition (DSmile,
but there is some e-mail on the C:\ drive I would like to save if possible.
So, this isn't a crisis, but I sure don't look forward to a complete
reinstallation.

I'd appreciate any advice.

I only know how to fix one problem but it sounds
like yours. It happened pretty much like yours on
one box and another just started getting blue
screens, both XP.

I reset the bios to default and haven't had a problem
with either in over two weeks on one and 3 days on
the other. It was actually a repair guy with integrity
who told me what he did and didn't charge me because
he give free estimates. I felt like I had to give him 1/2
hour labor.

Since you just had something done on it take it back to the people who
worked on it. It might not be something they did but at least you will find
that out and if it is something they did then they should fix it.

It couldn't have, of course, unless they had done a repair
installation for you. It would be rare that a new mb installation
would allow a clean next boot. Moreover, it would be rare that the
shop would install the mb and not boot into the machine at least one
time...to be certain that everything was running correctly.

So I think you can assume that they did a good and thorough job in
replacing the parts for you.

This could be a hardware problem...or a software problem...depending
on how you have xp configured.

Check the details of their warranty. But I would definitely take it
back to them. But be nice! lol

One more thought...

Its rare for a mb and ps to both quit at the same time. Maybe you
should re-evaluate what really happened to them the first
time...unless it was something catastrophic that makes immediate
sense.

Good luck.

Have a nice week...

When you change something major, such as the motherboard, you must expect to
do a repair installation at the very least, as the motherboard is the very
identity of the system. Simply boot from the XP CD and follow the prompts.

If you're not sure, suggest you repost this in

Yep, give that man a coconut. When changing mobos I find a complete reformat
and reinstall to be the best way, however a repair install will often do it.

Thanks for the advice.

Here's what I did: I took it back to the shop. The repair guy said he had
been having problems all weekend with the Microsoft site, so he wasn't
surprised that I had crashed during my download of XP updates. He said he
normally charges $70 to check out a computer with a Windows problem, but
felt bad because I had had to come back to him so soon, so he said he would
charge me only an additional $35.

I picked the computer up a few hours later and I'm using it now. Whatever he
did worked -- the computer is operating just fine and I didn't lose any of
my settings, other programs, etc. In other words, he didn't have to reformat
and reinstall.

As always, thanks to everyone who pitched in with advice. As usual, I learn
the most when something goes wrong and have to fix it -- even if I can't get
it done myself.
