I've always envied left handed people as their mouse hand is so close to
the keyboard. Its a pity the keyboard makers don't give us a choice for
most of humanity (right handed people.) Some people saw off their
numeric keyboard (most people never use it anyway) and that gets the
mouse closer but wrecks the keyboard for resale. Another way (and this
works especially well with trackball users as their pointing device
doesn't have to move around) is to remove the numeric keys from the
keyboard (most keys just pop out) and plop your trackball on top. Mice
people will have to rig up some platform that rests on the keyboard or
just off it.

Now I'd love to remap my arrow keys so I could get it even closer but
I've found this difficult in Mac. I'm using the Microsoft 4000 ergo
keyboard and was wondering if it might be possible to remap the Back and
Forward keys for left/right arrow and the zoom key for up/down arrow?
These are close to your normal hand position and more importantly don't
involve keystrokes which seem to introduce a multitude of problems. I
think the only way to remap the arrow keys is to find other single keys
to replace them. Or I wonder if there are mini keypads that would have
the arrow keys/page up/down, Home/end, etc with or without the numeric
keypad that you could just plug into a USB hub?

actually I rig the platform up so that the keyboard is above my trackball
which is under the keyboard. has been very convenient..

That's an awful lot of hand movement. Right not I'm moving in one plane
about 3". I'd like to change that to 1/2". We shall see....
