Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. The server will assign IP addresses to the clients PCs. It is needed if you have to use dynamic IP addresses e.g. with high speed internet access. A home network can use static IP addresses, manually configure IP addresses and forget the DHCP.

It is a server that automatically assigns IP addresses to computers on the
network.
