I hope that this is not a really stupid question, but here it is. I
currently have an AN35N Ultra motherboard with Corsair XMS 2700 memory in
it. I am thinking about upgrading from my current 2500+Barton chip at 333
FSB, to a 3200+ chip running at 400 FSB. Do I need 3200 memory to run this,
or will my current 2700 memory do the trick? Thanks.

Your question is not stupid at all, it's a good one because this
causes a lot of confusion among many people. Yes, your 2700 memory
will work fine. However, in order to get the true 400FSB speed from
your board, the CPU, memory and FSB must all run at 400. If any run
at 333, it creates a bottleneck and the whole system slows to the
lowest setting, in this case 333. So as you described, your system
will be running at 333. Once you get a stick of 400 and your new CPU,
your system will run at a full 400. BTW-your 35N board is a great
board.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

PC2700 will work fine, but you should get PC3200 RAM, PC2700 is only rated
to 166/333Mhz whereas PC3200 is rated at 200/400Mhz - which is what you want
for an XP3200+. You will not get PC2700 RAM to run stably at 200Mhz unless
you have top end Brands like Corsair XMS, OCZ, Mushkin etc.... So you may
well be OK.

I would question your reasons for upgrading, seeing that you already have a
Barton XP2500+ you can very easily overclock this chip to an XP3200+ by
simply raising the FSB and keeping the RAM in sync. To do this though, you
would need to have PC3200 ram installed. Before you bite the bullet why
don't you overclock your existing chip, if you do want some help/guidance do
this then just post back and I will help you out.

Sorry if this clouds the water for you.. Sad
