Too much noise

I have a two year old computer that I had built by a reputable company. It
has an AMD Thunderbird 266 1Gig CPU. I had a "SPEEZE SOC A CPU COOLER 1.2"
(whatever that is... a fan) installed since I had read that AMD processors
tend to run hot. The computer is fast and dependable, but noisy. I've
gotten used to it over time, but you can hear the thing running from the
other room. At the times when I can't keep myself from focusing on the
noise, using the computer becomes very annoying and tiring. Has anyone
found a cooling fan that's significantly quieter?

A lot of the newer fans tend to be bigger and slower - way quieter. A
while ago when Athlon 1-1.4 Tbirds were popular the fans tended to be
incredibly noisy/ I bought the most hyped Delta 60 mm high speed fan
6800 rpm and that was well known to be incredibly annoyingly loud.

If you have anything like that and it is 2 yrs old - then almost
anything is quieter. My current barton which uses the stock fan is
incredibly quiet compared to the set of older fans I have -Delta, two
stock ThermalTake 60mms.

If you get a Zalman or any of the other specialty fan/heatsinks known
to be quiet then it might be a safer choice if you want significant
