I run Windows 2000 Pro and it uses about 212K with ALL applications closed.
I have heard that there is a performance boost with XP but don't know for
sure. Obviously, XP does take more memory, but 512MB should be enough unless
you start editing large image or sound files.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: best os 2000 pro vs xp pro |

I have both, but find W2K Pro a lot more stable so I stick with that.
My CPU and video card (9700 Pro) both seem to run a few degrees hotter
under XP.

2000 pro doesn't incorparate as much API from directx as XP Pro does i would
say XP Pro would be more your gaming OS over XP Pro but 2000 Pro is a rock
solid OS for sure.

Huh? Would you care to provide some more details on that please? I
would love to know how "much API" I am missing out on by happily using
W2K Pro.

Huh? DirectX 9 is DirectX 9 and both run it fine. XP may in display of its
own on-screen components use more DirectX features than 2K, but that
doesn't affect third-party applications.

Yes, XP isn't much different to 2000 Pro, it just has a few cosmetic
bells and whistles to make things easier for newbies.

I run both OSes, and to be honest I used to really hate even the thought of
XP Pro on my system, but I have been a recent convert. It won't beat
W2Kpro for older systems but if you have a recent computer (P4 or Athlon)
and a bit of RAM (>512MB), the new functions are worth it.
