Hi,

I have a P4 2.8ghz, 2GB ram,ATIradeon9800 128mb, Sony Vaio PC...can
anyone tell me if I have the ability to (moderately) overclock this,
say to 3 or 3.2 ghz? I read that this processor will not allow me to
do it? Can someone point me in the right direction, like where to
start?

I would most appreciate your help,
Paul

Doubtful. But it's not the CPU holding you back, it's the motherboard in
your Vaio. All P4's have locked multipliers, which means the only way to
overclock them is to raise the fsb. Unless there is a bios setting to change
the fsb in your system, and I doubt there is, you're stuck with what Sony
sold you.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Hi,
as Skid has informed you, it will be hard for you to overclock your P4
2.8GHz in your *Vaio* system.

But as I'm learning about P4 overclocking I can share some theory with you
to help you know what's up!

St. Paul's Pentium 4 2.8GHz
Multiplier: x14 (locked)
System Bus: 200MHz / Front-Side-Bus: 800MHz as Intel's bus quad pumped <x4>)

So 14 x 200 = 2800 or 2.8GHz

In order for you to increase your MHz the only thing you can do is increase
your system bus, which by default is 200/800 on new P4's.

So for example to overclock a P4 2.8GHz to roughly a P43.2GHz it would be
this:

14 x 230 = 3220 or 3.2GHz

Of course in this example you would need DDR memory that could run DDR460
speeds or change the ratio of the memory so it will still run in spec.

Anyway I doubt this information will help you with *Overclocking* your
2.*GHz Vaio, but the theory will be good for you to understand. . .

If your Pentium 4 is a slightly older version (400/533 system bus) then my
information needs adjusting. I'm *assuming* you have a new version Razz

Hey folks,

You said that I need to raise the FSB? Well, I did download the
program Soft FSB which will allow me to change it through software,
haven't tried it yet. Could that work? And yeah, no manufacturers
I've had so far have allowed me to change any elaborate BIOS settings.
Otherwise, I guess I'll stick with the guns I got now.

Thanks again.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Brand computer manufacturers provide warranty on their assembled computers,
and for comprehensive reasons hate overclockers. That's why most of them
modify the bios in order to avoid overclocking by users.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Nice, concise, simple, explanation Wayne. I'm going to cut and paste it for
future use - if you don't mind Smile

Hi,
it may work, it may not work? You would probably have to read-up/post at a
Sony VAIO forum where others have tried to do the same thing. One thing
though when you overclock, you sometimes need to adjust*more* than the FSB,
you may also need to adjust the voltages to the CPU/Memory/Chipset to make
it work right (stable).

Don't rush anything, and do your homework first, just in case you *hose*
your lovely VAIO!
