Post subject: Shuttle overheating solved
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>shuttle (more info?)

Hey all, I have 2 Shuttles at home. My oldest is is the SN41G2 that I
have had for over 2 years. My newest is the XPC SN95G5V3 that was build
within in the last year. I love the small size. They take up so much
less room and easier to transport to my monthly LAN parties.

I like to play EQ LIve and II and both games are very demaning. I have
some major money invested in the graphic cards which both have cooling
fans. My oldest system was constantly overheating from day 1. When I
stated playing EQ II I was forced to remove the cover and then I used a
small table top fan to blow off the heat. It was a nasty and
inconvenient method. When my newest Shuttle began doing the same thing
I began to search for other more efficient methods.

I had added new vents on the older Shuttle and that made absolutely no
difference.

What did work was a little cable that allowed me to unplug the CPU fan
from the motherboard and to plug it into one of the power cord off of
the PSU. Now the fans runs non-stop at full out. For some people they
won't like this solution. My oldest Shuttle is quiet but the newer one
has a much louder fan. Again my solution was to buy a little cable that
adapted the CPU fan plug from the small plug that went into the main
board to one that plugged into the standard power cord off of the PSU.
The cables cost me $3 each.

I have three systems that I have built and the 3rd one is next in line
for replacement. I was going to build one in a full-size tower because
of the overheating issues. Now I can build a third Shuttle and not have
overheating issues.

Now for the history. I am a 49 yr old mother who lives alone an loves
it. So why do I need 3-systems? My sones play EQ with me every Monday.
The youngest son brings his future Mrs. with him. My eldest son brings
his computer. I had a special desk built to accommodate 3-systems
side-by-side. By belief is that the parent who can play with their
children will allways have a place in their lives. Ok, I also do a lot
of 2-boxing when they aren't around. I have even 3-boxed but that' a
bit trickier.

Are you aware there are fan controls in the bios ?

In the SN41G2 I'm currently working on there is a "PC Health Status"
in
the bios. There is a "CPU Fan Speed Control" parameter that can be set
to "Auto, Ultra-low, Low, Mid & Full".

I believe "Full" will achieve the same.

Eric

Hello,
I had to keep my fan on full to stop it overheating in the summer.
Periodically, the fan ventilation at the rear needs cleaning to ensure an
adequate air flow too.

Cheers

Peter.
