bought the following on ebay to work with my bd7-ii
P4 2.8 GHZ 1 MB HUGE L2 CACHE/ 533 FSB CPU SOCKET 478, CPU works
PROPERLY.
2.80 GHZ/1M/533 FSB
STEPPING SL7K9

when i power up the fan kicks up and then immediately stops. about
half a second of 'whuur' is all i get. I've got two machines, one is
300w power, 2gb, the other is 400w with 1.25gb. Both suffered the same
experience. I know the 2.8 isn't listed on abit's site as compatible
but i've read a few accounts on here of success with p4s up to 3ghz.
Am i missing the mark with something. At the moment i have to assume
the cpu is working as seller suggested but i'll try to get it tested
elsewhere soon.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on getting it fixed,
regards,

Andy

Are both systems BD7II's?

The speed itself isn't an issue. Northwood core CPU's are no problem at all
for the BD7II. However, your new processor is a Prescott part, and they are
not properly supported by your motherboard.

See above!

Secondhand CPU's are always a potential problem area. You really need to
drop it in a board with full Prescott support before making too many
assumptions in this area.

Shoot. I thought prescott chips were always described with a 'E' on the
end, eg. 2.8E etc. But more i learn
[http://cquirke.mvps.org/sp2intel.htm], all prescotts have L2 1M cache
and other p4s have 512. is this the difference?

oh well, back on ebay i guess.

Nope. Unfortunately Intel aren't anywhere near that consistent.

Even that isn't the complete answer nowadays. The 600 series Prescotts have
2MB of L2 cache.

The fundamental difference is that Prescott processors are built on the 90
nanometre manufacturing process. Northwood is 130 micron. In practice
though, the Prescotts do have the extra cache, yes.

To be honest, if you're looking for a new processor for your board, you're
better off with a Northwood anyway. They perform significantly better clock
for clock, and have much lower power consumption and heat dissipation.

The 90nm manufacturing tech is the giveaway.
