HI all,
Just put togther a new pc built on a P5K mb, 6600 quad core cpu. Got
everything in place, press the power button and the CPU fan starts,
but quickly shuts off -- nothing else happens. No HD whirl, nothing.
There is a green light on the motherboard when I plug it in though.
This also may help...I swapped out the 450w power supply in the case
(Antec Sonata II) for a new Silverstone 600w. When I disconnected the
old one, I noticed that a connector that ran from the power supply to
the mb..it's labeled "pwr_fan" does not have the same connector built
into the new power supply. This may be the problem but I'm not sure
what to do about it if the new power supply just doesn't have that
connector.
Thanks for any help.

Oop...I forgot the 4 pin connector:(

All you need is the heatsink fan plugged into the correct header. The
pwr_fan is for those PSUs that have a connector so you can monitor the
PSU fan (don't know why anyone would want to, though). The BIOS doesn't
care if it's there, or not. Just the CPU fan connector.
Do you have the 4x4 pin connector plugged into the 4 pin socket near the
CPU?
When it comes on momentarily and goes out, have you waited about 10-15
seconds for it to come back and boot? My P5B does this and it seems
common on Asus MBs. It comes on momentarily to check settings, then
shuts off. If all is OK, it will come back on in about 10-15 seconds
and boot from there. >> Stay informed about: New pc - power won't stay on. |

You're welcome. Don't worry: it's a common mistake (one I've made
myself). The CPU really appreciates the fresh voltage when it's plugged
in. >> Stay informed about: New pc - power won't stay on. |

Umm..... In building PCs the following rules are very helpful:-
1. "Look before you leap" == thoroughly read ALL relevant
documentation before assembling and <<certainly before applying
any power.>>
2. "More haste--less speed" == banish ALL distractions when building a
PC and defer the activity if:-
(a) you do not have the proper tools
(b) you are tired, irritable, bad-tempered or short of time
(c) you are missing some vital information... remember that Google
is your friend if the information is not in the obvious places
including manufacturer web-sites.
3." Keep it simple, stupid" Build initially with the minimum number
of peripheral devices essential to get the computer to run.

Also, having a too small a heat sink on a new computer CPU will do the same
thing. I managed to get to BIOS and noticed the temp. before it shut down.
Had to buy a larger heat sink.

I am having very similar problems to what algae had, turn power on
computer fans go for about 10 seconds then everything switches off,
then moments later it tries again and same thing happens. Also note
no screen is reached on the computer or any beeps heard. I too have
the asus p5k-e mb with E8400. Have tried all my other components ram,
graphics, power supply on another computer and they work. Tried a
e6750 in my motherboard and it had same problems, so don't think its
the CPU. Pretty sure all the plugs are in properly too.
Anyway Ideas I am sending the mb back as im pretty sure theres a fault
