I am looking for reasonably priced PCI SATA controllers with RAID 1
and good driver support for both Linux and Windows, something in the
sub £50 ($100) range.

Any good controllers in that range.

I have seen an Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 1210SA advertised for £44 and a
4 port one for £75.
I want to use one in a Linux workstation and the other in a Dell
server. Although the Dell has SCSI raid I get more SATA capacity for a
lower price.

Driver compatibility is my main requirement.

Loads - look on ebay and various online shops. I bought a PCI SATA
controller for about £5 earlier this year from ebay (shipped from hong kong
to UK). What do you want it for, perhaps if you give us more info someone
here can link to you a specific shop or product to suite your needs?
