Post subject: Is there a problem using 4 DIMM's on a S2466N?
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>tyan (more info?)

Hi,

I have a:

Tyan S2466N (not 4M) with 1.03 bios.
Dual AMD MP 2600+ cpu's
Enermax EG651P-V(E) Power supply (550w, 650 peak)

I am trying to put 4 512MB ECC Registered PC2100 DIMMs in to this
motherboard. With any 3 of the DIMMs, all is well. As soon as I add a
fourth dimm, I get crashes and instability. I have tried Corsair ram,
Infineon, Samsung and Nanya RAM. Always the same result. 3 DIMMs and all
is well, 4 DIMMs and there are endless crashes.

How can I get all 4 DIMMs to work together? Is there a problem with this
board?

I can't fit the current 1GB dimms in due to them being double height and
there is not enough room in that location for such tall dimm's so I am going
with 512mb dimms for now since they are low profile and maybe I will upgrade
to 1gb dimms later when they are higher density and low profile also.

Thanks for all responses.

your dimm must be double sided instead of single sided.

a single sided dimm uses 1 bank, double uses 2.
the board's support normally 6 bank max.

check it out

Hi, ok, I have checked it out. I have read the data sheets, errata guides,
revisions lists, and application notes of the AMD-762 system controller
(northbridge in the mpx chipset) from AMD. The chipset clearly supports 8
banks, has all 8 needed chipselects and can support 4 double sided ECC
registered PC2100 DIMMs. The only stipulation is that the largest logical
banks need to be in the lowest numbered slots and work down from there.
Since I am using all identical dimm's it is a non-issue. The Tyan manual
and website don't cover this either.

If the S2466N really cannot support more than 6 banks of registered ram,
then it is a goof on Tyan's part as the chipset clearly supports 8 banks.
Something like the DDR SDRAM power supply on the motherboard is not strong
enough or something like that.

Where did you find that this board only supports 6 banks?

I have a 2462UNG.

first advertizments said up to 4gb... then it secretly moved
to max 6bank/3gb max Wink

so I would suspect a goof.

I always and will always buy single sided DIMMs... just in case Wink

anyways see the notes at the bottom of Tyan's Memory page for your board>
Special Note *

Memory modules are tested with the recommended power supply.
Some modules on the list above contain stacked DRAM parts (36 chips per
module).
These parts have thermal limitations in some chassis configurations. It
is advised to
verify that your chassis configuration as adequate airflow to support
stacked (36 chip) parts. *
TYAN recommends maximum of 3 modules at DIMM1, DIMM2, and DIMM3 sockets. *

When using 4GB of total memory - The AMD-760 MPX requires a portion of
memory to be reserved for PCI/AGP devices. Allocation for these devices
is dependent on the number of PCI devices installed, and option ROM for
each device. Common configurations will see 3.5GB to 3.8GB of available
memory.

Thank you for your response. I saw that note, but I thought it only applied
to the DIMM's with the * beside them. Perhaps Tyan didn't do something
quite right. For the S2466N manual, it originally said 3GB max. Then the
addendum said that it now supports 4GB.

Oh well, I can make do with 1.5GB of ram for now. I'll have to look for
single sided modules in the future. It is too bad since the 762 northbridge
was designed for 8 banks of ram.
