ok, if I am building a computer say on dell or something, I choose my
motherboard and then I have to choose my ram, now since PC 133 and PC 2700
have different grooves in them, how do I assure that my motherboard will be
able to hold the ram I want (PC 2700).

Well itll usually say whether it takes 133 or any of the other speed
2100-2700-3200 etc. Im not even sure if they still make any that take
133. They made a few boards a while back when DDR was expensive to
take both PC133 and DDR but Im not sure if they even make those
anymore.

Ask Dell... you're paying for the support so you might as well use it.

In general you want to consider the motherboard chipset, need to be
familiar with it. The system specs should also mention what type of memory
it uses.

Well, 133 was still in use three years ago, as that was when my father's
company replaced their Deskpro 2000s with Optiplex GX150s. He bought his
computer when he retired, and he now wants to upgrade it to run XP and
Office 2003. It requires (at least) another 128MB (it currently runs 128).
Dell wants £60 for the requisite module - for the same money, he could
purchase 256 from Crucial - with change! However, there's always the issue
of whether the two types will play nicely together - but the Crucial can
always be returned.

I could do with doubling the RAM in mine (it's also a Dell, but it was a
gift so I can't complain too much!) but, as you know, it only takes RIMMs -
so to add another 512 is going to cost me around £200, and I don't have the
cash at the moment.

So thats where DELL is making their profits because everytime I read
the dealsites it seems like they are picking them clean. I mean Ive
seen some insane deals posted - some price mistakes that they honored.
Systems for $200-300 w/o monitor though.

Mem I think the fact that a few large firms bought some firms up -
they were investigated for price fixing a little while ago , and the
fact the industry was trying to cut slack in general - though the 3200
and 2700 has come down from their high prices , the super low and free
after rebate type deals have dried up a lot so the price is kind of
converging on a middle zone in the US.

Compared to the almost weekly super cheap or freebie deals its
expensive but you can still find deals if you wait around enough here
and there. I got two 3200 sticks for around $55-60 each after rebate
two months ago. Right before 2100 DDR fell real low - they were giving
away PC133 everywhere. I got so sick of it I stopped buying it even
for free after rebate. Then 2100 started bottoming and lots of FAR
deals for that. Now everything has sort of bottomed out and risen a
bit.

I bought two sticks of 256 - 2100 one for free and one for $14, 3
months ago and one PC133 for $4.99 after a huge rebate , cost was $80
upfront.

I recently sold the 2100 for $15 a piece since I had two Crucial 256
sticks too and the two 3200 sticks. I should have kept them. The last
few months the sales have stunk on 2100 DDR - at least $25 after
rebate or more. I know someone who needs some now. And you see some
laughable prices nowadays for both PC133 and 2100 - as high as $50-70
, a joke when its not on sale.

>However, there's always the issue

Crucial is very good. Like Ive posted - I was shocked to push up the
2100 to 3200 with no problems. I would have just bought one stick of
3200 if I had known. Ive read weird things about how picky DELLs are
so that still may be a problem though.

Tell him not to bother with the XP/Office upgrade. He simply
opens himself up to the horrors of the EULA and restrictions of
checking in with Bill, together with the potential snooping. Once
he does such an upgrade he can be forced, at no little expense to
him, to do any further upgrades etc. that Bill wants, whenever
Bill needs more money.

Instead he should consider adding a hard disk for backup,
partitioning, and installing Linux/OpenOffice. He should be able
to do such step by step without disturbing his present system.

If you go to some site like www.crucial.com
they have a memory upgrade selector form most name brand comptuers and name
brand motherboards.

It gives quite detailed information about memory on all Asus motherboards.
You might try that if you can.

You may also go to the manuf and downloas a manual for your computer.

Trouble is - as you should have worked out - I'm in the UK and we don't tend
to get 'rebates'. The only rebate I've seen here in the last year (or more)
is £50 back from MS if you buy XP Pro from Amazon (current until the end of
April). MS are also offering Plus! DME free if you buy XP Home (again from
Amazon - expires 15/03).

I was most jealous when Kony posted the other day that Best Buy were doing
200GB drives for $20! I could have used that - I've just spent £70 on a
160GB, because my crappy Hitachi Deskstar boot drive crapped out (it was
helped on its way by Intel's stupid Application Accelerator). At the current
exchange rate $20 = £10.85 (or 5p per GB)! Hell, I could have bought a
truckload and made a fortune on eBay!

That better be some super duper good memory.
Its true if you buy the avg retail price for name brand quality 3200
DDR its around that price but Ive seen a lot of sales here and there
on regular 3200 down to $55-85.

For 512 meg sticks. Im running two sticks 1 gig now.

Now once again if you are running a Dell or something picky Im not
sure they would work.

I got a Kingston rebate deal at the Kingston site which they run
intermittently. Last time I looked it was still going on but rising in
price to $65 or so. Keep in mind its not the hyperx or whatever their
fancy branded stuff is called.

Its plain old Kingston 3200 DDR but it works fine with my ASus nforce
2 - a7n8x deluxe board with a Athlon 3200 xp (actually overclocked
2500 barton) . No problems.

And another stick of Kbyte 3200 512 meg ddr at FRYs site OUTPOST.com
They also always run rebate deals. A lot of people bash the rebates by
Kbyte warning people away but I already got my check. They may have
changed since several people were posting about it and it seemed FRYs
read it because they issued some blurb about how they would issue you
the rebate check if you didnt get it in XXX days or something like
that.

I was leery about Kingston let alone Kbyte which is pretty run of the
mill branded memory. But it all works - Kbyte, Kingston and even the
Crucual 2100 @ 3200. I just dont have problems with memory. I used to
read these posts when the Nforce2 boards a while back and they would
scare the bejeezes out of you. Tons of people had booting problems ,
freezes etc and they blamed everything from PS , MB to memory. And
they would talk about getting the best memory which often didnt work
too. But I guess things have stabilized cause everything seems to
work when I tried it.
