I'm trying to upgrade my ram from 1Gb to 4Gb by replacing the 2 x
512Mb pc-2100u dimms with 4 x 1Gb pc-3200's but my system will not
boot with the new memory. It powers up and hard drive led glows
steady. There is no beep code and the monitor remains black.

I tried all possible combinations of the new chips - installing one at
a time in dimm slot 0 and all other combinations of multiple dimms. I
put back my original memory and everything is fine.

My motherboard is an Intel D865GBF/D865PERC with a dual core Intel P4
3.0 GHz and 800 MHz system bus. The motherboard documentation clearly
indicates un-buffered DDR400 is supported with 800 MHz system bus for
up to 4Gb (4x1Gb dimms).

I have removed my AGP video card and am using the onboard video to
avoid memory retention issues (as instructed by the motherboard
documentation).

I am now out of ideas of what may be wrong or what to try next.
Can someone please help?

- Dan C.

Did you get these from Ebay ?

Can you provide URLs so we can look at what you bought ?
If not, are there part numbers printed on the memory chips ?

If I had to guess, I'd say this is probably some of that "high density" RAM.

Ebay? Gee ... how'd you guess?!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350023900824

The individual chips are marked "GX4-75".
There seems to be no obvious indication of any manufacturer or part
numbers.

Plus, I'll bet it was a lot cheaper than that good low density stuff. I
know--I bit on it too, some time back. Their ads sure are tempting--so
tempting in fact that I overlooked the density-factor. s

Do you see an Intel chipset in this list ?
This is the so-called "restricted chipset" list, common to those Ebay sales.
Roughly translated, it means "do not buy me" Smile
