Did it work okay prior to XP? Did it work okay at first under XP and
then start failing after you applied a patch?
If either is true, it is more likely that it's a software (probably
driver) problem. As the OS shuts down, it has to unload the drivers
in sequence. At a given point, the screen goes blank as the video
drive unloads, but the system isn't fully finished yet. A driver that
is having trouble responding to final requests will hang the system
on shutdown.
Make sure you have the latest version of device drivers for everything.
