I need a new prninter as I just found out my Lexmark Z65
isn't priting correctly. It looks screwed, i've tried
running all the clean up tools but still no joy. I initially
thought it had run out of ink but looking at the ink report
this doesnt seem to be the case. Besides the ink costs
around £40!
So I want a new printer. I need something that does very
good text, i'm not bothered about printing photos. If it was
able to print onto dvds that would be cool but aint a
priority. Ideally it would also be quite cheap to run. I
hardly have need to print so speed isnt a issue.
I dont seem to have any luck with printers, my Lexmark is
screwed and the one I had before that an Epson also broke. >> Stay informed about: Can anyone recommend a printer? |

You might consider a consumer grade laser printer. They
are pretty good at text if not outstanding at it, and may
be more suited to an intermittent use pattern that leaves
enough time between print jobs for an ink-jet's nozzels to
become clogged. Cost per page can be quite low too if you
buy refill kits and get at least 2-3 cycles out of the
drum/cartridge... with light use that could be several
years.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Can anyone recommend a printer? |

I've found HP printers to be reliable, never seem to have any problems
with them.

The HP 5150 is a very good printer. In fact all HP printers seem to
hit the mark quite well.
I have a HP 5550 and this is very quick and produces super results.
But the 5150 is probably your best bet.
Check out PCPro.co.uk for reviews and recommended printer. It also has
an A-List of hardware it recommends.

I dont think I can really afford a laser printer. I rarely
use the printer but I do need it now and again.
My only worry like you stated is that the nozzles become
clogged when it's not in use. If I could find a laser
printer that was able to print quality text in colour and
was good value then i'd be happy. Like I said, printing
photo's doesnt interest me at all so thats not a issue.
At the moment I am leaning towards the HP 5150, though I
have seen a few HP printers which state that they do '1200
dpi x 1200 dpi' in mono. I presume this is text only, which
is twice the dpi than the HP 5150.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Can anyone recommend a printer? |

Some laser printers are very low priced. In the US some are under $200.

Then buy used.
A few years back, I got my first laser printer, for $25 at
a school rummage sale. I'd bought my first inkjet a few
months before, I'd only used dot matrix printers before that,
and wasn't happy with the way it used up ink (and the cost
of refill), or the fact that the ink smeared when it got wet.
The toner in that laser printer lasted me a year and a half,
and I'm sure I would have gone through quite a few inkjet refills
had I stuck with the inkjet over that period.
When the toner ran out, I debated since it was an old and not so
common laser. Before I got around to deciding about getting a new
toner cartridge, I scored an HP laserjet 4P for fifteen dollars at
a Rotary Club sale. Shook the toner cartridge, and I got at
least 500 sheets out of it. The page count was a low 3000, so I
spent money on a new cartridge. I've printed at least 3000 pages
in the year I've had that printer.
The thing is so cheap, and fast, that I've printed many a multiple
copy of things, when I might have otherwise spent money on photocopies.
The print quality is also wonderful.
The only appeal that an inkjet printer would have for me is for
color printing. I don't even need that, just think it might be
fun. Printers are easy to come by, they fill the garbage and
garage sales. I've brought home a few. But I've not put
any into use due to the cost of ink refills.

Something like a Samsung 1740 has recently been available at
a few sources for $70-90 after rebates/coupons/etc. That
includes a starter cartridge good for at least a few
thousand pages, and a refill kit should be available later
for under $20.

IMHO, you don't need 1200x1200 for text though I suppose it
could depend on the particular printer too, I don't have
enough experience with inkjet text, I always use a B&W laser
for text, which looks perfect even at 300x300.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Can anyone recommend a printer? |

Get a dot matrix. Cheap to run, slow as heck and noisy, but you said
you don't care about speed and don't print much. Also, built like a
tanks. I remember a buddy dropping one out of a second story window
(landed on a grassy lawn). I'm not actually sure if it was him or
his girlfriend that dropped it out that window. Anyways, the dust
cover cracked, but it still printed for another year before he
replaced it. Try that with an inkjet!

You might be thinking of "draft" mode or of 8/9 pin printers. In that
mode, it's pretty obvious that it's "computer printed" the text
quality isn't terribly good. In NLQ mode, however, a good 24pin dot
matrix will yield results similar to that of a type writer. This is,
not quite as sharp as a laser, but is sharper than many inkjets.
Assuming you go with a 24 pin, text quality isn't much of an issue. 8
and 9 pin printers are what you usually see used in industrial
applications, and text quality is pretty bad even in NLQ mode on those
-- noticeable jaggies, and some blurring.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Can anyone recommend a printer? |

Fair point, but the OP did state that he wanted "very good text", and
I think even a 24pin Dot Matrix in NLQ mode is not "very good"....its
good but not Very good.
The HP 5150 will produce laser quality print, even a cheap 3650 (£35)
will do justice to any text.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I have decided to get a HP
