refurbished camera

Am I right in saying that refurb cameras have been sent back to the
manufacturer beacuse thay've had a problem, and been fixed? As far as I
know, they are then checked much more carefully than the ordinary
cameras would be, so I suppose that (unless it could be a recurring
problem) it is actually a *better* camera than a normal one. Please
correct me if I'm wrong!

My FujiFilm A204 is refurb and I am very happy with it. I haven't had
one problem and it came with full manufacturer warranty too.

I bought a refurb Nikon 5700 recently, with a 90 day warranty. While
cosmetically as new, the shot counter was around 3,000. The CCD had over
512 stuck/dead pixels (which I was able to remap using software). Even
though everything works on the camera, I wouldn't buy a refurb again.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

How does one "remap" pixels on a CCD? They are not harddrives.

That is one way. Sometimes they have been used as demos. Someitimes they
are returned by customers who cahnged their minds after opening the box.
Sometimes there is an overstock to be disposed of.

It is actually very similar to the process of building a bad sector table
for a hard drive, except that the data is reconstructed from surrounding
pixels instead of by using an alternate disk sector.

Using external software, in diag mode you can activate a number of
functions, including rebuilding the bad pixel table. Even the earlier
coolpix models support this.
