Is this one of those, "Nabisco.com halted....cereal port not
responding." situations?

I'm not familiar with the A8V MB, but if the connector is not present, I
doubt the I/O controller would support one even if you soldered a connector
into the pc board. Could be wrong. Also, unless you are an experienced
technician, I would not recommend soldering on any modern motherboard.
Voids any warranty, and you could do damage and not even know it.

It would be much easier, faster, and inexpensive to just get a USB to Serial
adapter cable from Newegg. Example:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812107108 $12.00.
Lots of brands and types to choose from.

When I installed my P5W DH Deluxe, I had to get an adapter cable for my
parallel printer. USB on one end, and Centronix parallel connector on the
other. Unbelievably easy. Clean and painless. Didn't even have to install
software, all ran under XP Sr2b.

Asus has decided (figure this one out) that serial ports are important
enough to continue having them on [some of] their motherboards, but not
important enough to have the connector on the back I/O shield AND ...
[figure out this logic] not important enough to actually give you the
connector from the header socket on the motherboard to an actual DB-9
serial port connector.

[Duh .... what are they thinking? Must be a blond female product
manager. ASUS: The connector belongs on the rear I/O shield, but if
you are not going to put it there, then give us the cable & bracket.]

They do sell the connector separately at their online parts store.

If you have a bunch of old DB-9 to 10-pin header sockets available, you
MAY have the right one. There are two standards for how this cable is
wired. If you go back to about August or September of 2006, you will
find a group of posts from me on this board discussing this exact issue
[in the context of the P5B motherboard], and identifying the right vs.
wrong wiring of the connector.

If you're in the US or Canada, you can buy the port connector directly from
the Asus e-store:

http://estore.asus.com/shop/

more specifically:

http://estore.asus.com/shop/category.asp?catid=133

The shipping may be about the same as the cost of the part, but as that cost
is $6.50US...

I've also seen eBay shops that specialize in Asus parts (especially things
like I/O shields for people who have purchased bare mainboards), but their
prices may be higher.

Return address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

The serial port connector on this mobo is just a simple dil header - you
should be able to purchase something suitable from any electronic
component shop. I'm not sure where you are but, in the UK, a Maplin
shop would be able to supply.

But there are two types of these internal serial cables, wired straight thru
for Asus motherboard headers, and cross wired for Intel motherboard headers.
Those available at Fry's Electronics are Intel, and do not work on the Asus
motherboard. Both types are frequently available, but you must pay attention
to what it is, and what you need.

See http://www.scantips.com/serial-DB9.html for pictures of the two types.

From a previous post I made:

There are two "standards" for COM headers. Asus tends to stick with
one of the standards (AT-EVEREX-INTEL). You likely won't find
confirmation of this, except by users trying it. I haven't seen it
published in an Asus manual (unless it was a really old manual).

AT-EVEREX-INTEL Version
http://www.pccables.com/07120.htm

DTK Version
http://www.pccables.com/07121.htm

The connectors are cheap enough, you can buy one of each
and test both of them if you like. RS-232 is pretty bullet
proof to mis-connections.

Can't say if it is the same or not, but you might get a chuckle
out of my similar experiences on a different board:

http://home.att.net/~Tom.Horsley/p4c800e.html

The most fascinating part was they documented the pinout of every
single header in the motherboard manual *except* the rs-232 header
(DOH!).
