Post subject: How to set up my small network to connect to an outside WAP?
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>networking (more info?)

Hello. I would like some suggestions and tips on how to pursue a network
setup with these old devices I have lying around. I am still consider a
network newbie, but learning. I am not sure if I need to add any thing
else to make this happen. I would like to avoid having a dedicated
computer/machine running to do this since I tend to use the computers,
power off, and reboot a lot. This should be challenging and educational.

I would like to configure my old Netgear RT311 router (firmware v3.25;
5/4/2001; provide some security with its NAT) connected to an old
Netgear DS108 hub (8 ports) devices to connect to a neighbor's wireless
access point (WAP) [yes, I got permission to do this]. Basically, the
WAP is like a gateway and DHCP for my side? Then, a few computers
shouldn't matter the OS' like Linux, Windows, and MacOS X) can be
connected to the hub for Internet access while my router protects my
mini-LAN from my neighbor's network and outside.

So basically an idea I have is something like this (use fixed width font
to view this ASCII art map correctly):

[ next door neighbor's WAP ]
|
|
[ what goes here to get connected to neighbor's WAP?? ]
|
|
[ Netgear RT311 router ]
|
|
[ Netgear DS108 hub ]
/ \
/ \
[ Linksys WAP11 ] [ computers with ]
[ for computers ] [ ethernet cables ]
[ via wireless ]

Will this work?

The thing is that USB Adapter does not have a ethernet connection to the
router; only USB and wireless feed. So, I don't know if this device
would be any use. It does work well for directly to computer, but not to
my LAN and I do not want to have a dedicated computer for this. Also, I
need guidance if I need to change anything in the configurations.

Thank you in advance. Smile
