What do driver version 1.18 and 1.19 offer over v1.17 (which I have
installed) for the SIS900 on K7S5A? I don't see any notes on the SIS
website.

I have a desperate problem with TCPIP on XP. System running normal for
years. I rebooted 7/1 and now ... I get connected to my router (and
cable modem) in windows SAFE mode but NOT in normal boot. You name it
I've tried it to fix this, about a dozen differnent types of things.
This doesn't appear to be a virus issue, but rather something with
windows or the drivers. probably not driver related but I'm near the
end of the possibilities.

THANKS.
Wayne

A $10 PCI network card seems to be the obvious solution. If I were to
guess, because it is the norm, you have failing capacitors on your
motherboard. check the tin cans. If they are bulging, they need to be
replaces. They are failing to the point of making the machine flakey.

thanks for making the nice suggestion. caps are not the problem:

a) none look bad from a thorough visual check

b) PC has a 3C905TX card which I had already tried. Same problem +
symptoms, I get a private APIPA address (169.254.xxx.xxx) after it gets
stuck "acquiring a network address", except when running in windows'
SAFE mode.

So the kicker here is, what is in safe mode TCP that is different from
"normal" windows startup?

(And bloody Windows seems to have deleted my named windows recovery
checkpoint which I created before I started mucking with msconfig so I
could get back to my normal running system. So now I'm even more
pissed.)

Install any new video drivers lately? They're the mostly likely candidate
to have stepped on your network drivers and they're usually not called in
their full glory in the Safe mode.

Has anyone installed the updated drivers offered by windows UPDATE
(dated 4/19/2006 with name of SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter"). If
so, is there a readme or release notes??

I am still interested in what is improved/changed in these updated
drivers, as ECS, the board mfgr declines to say, and defers to SIS -
who also has no release notes on the web and has not responded to
e-mail.

Eric, thanks for the suggestion. no, I have not updated this driver for
several years. And when windows offers updated drivers through UPDATE
my practice is to not install them until I know what they do and I can
do it in a controlled manner at a non-critical time.

As for my network problem - best as I can determine, it was resolved by
uninstalling Norton Internet Security. It was not enough to completely
disable it (I had turned off all the options and services), I had to
actually rip it off the machine.

Good practice. My theory about drivers is pretty basic: "If it ain't
broke." It sounded as if some update snuck aboard anyway and didn't take
effect until a reboot. I guess that update came from Norton. I've found
they install whatever they want whenever they want to. I'm not sure I want
to be a Norton zombie. I switched to McAfee this year when Norton stopped
supporting Win98. Hey, I got a lot of old machines that I still love like
pets.

Out of the two culprits, Norton and video drivers, I think Norton's the one
I would look at first, too. Every year they bury their tendrils deeper and
deeper in the OS. It's almost as if they prevent infection by preinfecting
you with their own Norton trash. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if it
blocked some port somewhere that pooched your NIC.

Glad it's running again. Good to be reminded that you have to watch Norton
like a hawk. Smile
