My computer was assembled not by a company like Dell or HP. So, when I have
to format the hard drive and reinstall the OS, something funny always
happens.

For example, my dvd drives do not deliver sound when I play a store bought
dvd of a movie or TV show.

Sound comes out of the speakers if I play a music CD or if I play some .wma
files.

Anyone know what I need to do, to get my computer to play sound from a store
bought dvd of a movie or TV show?

A DVD plays MPEG2 with audio decoded by the application
playing it. There is no audio cable or unusual settings
required, just the expected ones.

Check the player software, see if there are any related
settings. What player software are you using?

Check your windows (Or audio card/motherboard integrated)
mixer to be sure volume is at an acceptible level and
non-muted.

Check that your speakers are plugged into the correct jack.
Some audio cards/boards may output to multiple jacks when
there is only 2 channel output so it could appear you have
that set right for some uses but it actually needs plugged
into another jack. On most newer motherboards the front 2
channels output to a green colored jack. This is assuming
you are using analog output, or is it digital?

What motherboard and/or sound card are you using? Do you
have both motherboard sound and a sound card? Is it
possible the DVD playback software is outputting to the
wrong sound device?

I think I had the same problem you are facing. Try using a different player
to test if it a software or hardware issue. For me Windows Media player had
no sound on DVD audio however Nero played the same disks fine.

In WMP options > tools > devices > pick your DVD drive and try the different
"playback" options for sound. (I think that is how I fixed it)

Hmmmm, I installed RealPlayer and still have no sound when I play a store
bought dvd video of a TV show. Like WMP, Real Player does play my music
CDs, and in general, my PC plays all other kind of sounds.

I have a clue as to what the problem might be, but I don't know how to
solve. My motherboard has some kind of audio capability, but I also have a
sound card in the machine. After I formatted the machine and reinstalled
the OS, a couple of the devices on my motherboard were not working -- the
ethernet card and my sound capability. A friendly stranger (not far from
the truth) stopped by to help me and he installed the driver for my ethernet
card. I'm not sure where he got the driver from, but he did it pretty quick
and was gone before I had a chance to thank him (who was that masked man?).

But I noticed that the speaker on my motherboard did not work. That is,
after the OS was reinstalled, I wasn't hearing the little dings and rings
that accompany typical user interactions with most programs.

So, another person (I have always relied on the kindness of strangers)
helped me install the driver for my sound card and that got my sound
working, until I tried the dvd video.

I have the documentation and installation disk for my motherboard. The
documentation said there would be an installation option for audio features
when I opened the installation CD, but I didn't see it when I popped the CD
in. That is, what I saw on the screen did not match what I saw in the
installation guide (manual).

Sooooooo, I started hunting around on intenet for my driver, on the website
for the motherboard manufacturer, but did not see it. I have an ASUS, A8N-E
motherboard.

*sigh*

I looked. I did see an audio setting (AC97 Audio?) but it was already
disabled. I would prefer to find the driver. My Dvice Manager shows one
yellow question mark, and I have a feeling it is for the onboard audio
device. I tried to get Windows to install the driver, but the wizard
failed, saying it could not find the software.

Any idea on how I go about finding the driver for this thing?

I am guessing you did not disable 'onboard sound' from within the BIOS.
Just keep hitting the "delete" key right after you bootup your PC, then try
searching the menus for that or something similar. If you have a sound
card, you do not want to risk a conflict or the wasted resources of you CPU
handling the sound.

Can you find the AC97 audio driver for Windows XP on asus.com? I only saw a
AC97 audio driver for Linux.

Try pulling out the sound card and enabling the AC97 Audio within the bios
(Windows should install the drivers automatically upon restart, asus.com
also has the drivers), if that fixes the problem then it might be a hardware
issue with the card. Some sound cards require a direct connection to the
CD/DVD drive but I have never run into a situation when it was required.

It should be this:

http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/audio/ALC850/ALC850_V5870_WHQL.zip

The Linux driver was last updated in 2004 this file is a year newer. The
description does not say AC97, but this should be what you need to run mobo
sound on a 32 bit XP system.

OK, so here's the thing that scares me about this. When I kick off the
install, I get a warning dialog saying that the software has not passed
Windows logo requirements. Isn't that a Bad Thing?

It just means MS has not tested it, Asus is a large company and would not
likely put out a patch that had not been thoroughly tested. (leave that to
EA and the Battlefield series to put out patches that make problems worse)

Just make sure to set a restore point, and good luck.

OK, I set my restore point. When I click the link you gave, it takes me to
a folder that has several .exes. Which one installs my mother board audio

The readme has all the steps. I downloaded the update and looked through
the instructions which are fairly straightforward. Another option is to
call Asus, they have good phone support people. Good luck.
