A DVD player application, is one way to get source to drive a
5.1 speaker system. (See posting by "BigJim".)
A lot of audio is only going to be stereo. If you want 5.1 from
stereo source, then the audio driver needs "virtualization" capability.
My sound card has an "enable virtual 5.1 audio and reverberation"
check box, and the purpose of that, is to convert 2 channels to
5.1 channels. That adds a bit of depth cueing, to the audio
content. That would be a software feature, and the hardware in
my sound card, doesn't know anything about virtual 5.1. It is
a driver function, and requires CPU cycles to do the conversion
and add the sound effect.
I don't see an option here, that will convert 2 channel content
to 5.1 speakers. But this manual for Realtek Hdaudio, doesn't
show all the screens, so is incomplete.
