We are in the market for a new digicam, the basics of what we want are
this...10x optical zoom with at least 5 MP.
We have looked a bit at the Panasonic TZ1 but I am a bit wary of the lithium
battery and charge(holding) time.
We have a canon powershot A70 that uses AA's that we can buy in bulk very
cheaply( Costco) I would like the advantage of just being able to pop in a
new set of batteries when needed, rather than having to charge the one in
the camera( we may not be able to at times).
Any suggestions on which direction to go?
$350 price range
Thanks >> Stay informed about: I want these specs..10x optical, 5+ MP |

Try the Kodak Easyshare V610 with 10X optical zoon and 6.1 MP. It also has
Bluetooth wireless. Buy.com has it for $398.99.

With a long zoom, image stabilization is important, unless
you plan to always use a tripod. I recently got the
Panasonic LZ3, and I know that the image stabilization works
well. >> Stay informed about: I want these specs..10x optical, 5+ MP |

Canon S3 IS. I have the S2, but I think it's discontinued. It may be a bit
more than you want to spend though. 12X optical zoom, image stabilization. I
looked at a Panasonic (forget the number) when I was looking at the Canon,
but the Pana was too small and "plasticky" feeling. The Canon uses AA
batteries.
I didn't put the megapixels on there cause unless you are going to enlarge
to poster size, or are going to do some *huge* crops, megapixels are the
*last* thing you should look for.
Firstly, look for -lens quality, -eronomics, -Optical (not digital) zoom,
etc...
Rechargable AA's are, in my opinion, the way to go. Get a charger with some
batteries at Costco. Keep the charged batteries with you. Unless you
*really* can't charge batteries for whatever reason, in my opinion it's nuts
to use throwaway batteries. Besides the cost, what about the disposal of the
batteries??

I bet you could get a great deal if you could find an S2 IS around. It's an
awesome camera.

Thanks very much, it looks like the S3 IS may fit the bill perfectly.
I found the S2 but I believe the LCD is only 1.8 correct?( I found it once
but couldn't locate that spec again for some reason).

Correct. I don't find the smaller size of the LCD a hindrance, I rarely use
the LCD. I can't stand framing shots in it. That's one reason I really like
the Electronic View Finder (EVF)
It enables you to see all the specs of the shot (shutter speed, etc) in the
viewfinder. So outside, while people are holding their cameras out at arms
length squinting trying to see in their LCD, I'm taking pictures. )
Even inside where you can see in the LCD, it seems so silly to frame your
shot in it. I mean, think about it, is there a more unstable position ripe
for camera shake then holding it out at arms length? IS is good, but it's
not perfect. It's not going to stop major shake.
I find it so funny watching people go through all sorts of contortions to
shoot while looking at the LCD when generally it's a lot easier to look
through the Viewfinder. It's like people think.."I have a digital camera
with an LCD. I *must* use the LCD to take pictures."
I'm glad I wasn't too late to the party to submit the S3 for your
consideration. After having 4 digital cameras...(Olympus, Fuji, and now 2
Canons), I'd have to say that Canon is close to perfection when it comes to
dialing in stuff on digital cameras.

Though the LCD size is a consideration, it is for viewing saved shots, NOT
for framing them, in fact i dont think i have ever even thought about doing
that to tell the truth.
Its up in the air right now between the S3 and the S2, i am going to go look
at a Fuji S5200 that a friend has stated they are very pleased with.
I sure do wish I could find something along the lines (size wise) of the
panny TZ1 that uses AA or AA batteries.
The only thing about the S series I am slightly concerned about is the size.

I absolutely agree, it seems that a lot of people think that the LCD's main
reason for being is framing shots.
