I have come across with a very challenging problem, let's see who can
solve my problem! ^__^
I have a broken system, which cannot show the bios screen. I bought an
ABIT VA-20 to replaced the mainboard. During the process, I find that
all the 5V holes in the power supply plug were burnt.
during the installation of VA-20, i have another challenge. the power
LED on my case come with a three-hole female plug, while the
mainboard provide me a socket of 2 pins.
here is a diagram to show what i mean:
OOO <-- the female plug
- +
position + is the positive pole while - is the negative pole
OO <--the socket
- +
i try to ingore the power LED, but the system deeps and there was
nothing shown in the monitor. I tried to connect the -ve pole of plug
to the -ve pole of the socket with a small wire, then the system can
load the BIOS.
However, the windows on my harddisk was also faulty and could not
start normally. I want to re-install it by booting from CD-ROM.
however it entered a screen with a blinking cursor. After a while it
re-boot.
if I boot the system from harddisk, normally it should reach a screen
showing choices like safe mode and boot normally. Instead, it reach a
screen of many numbers(i think they are the value of registers).
Sometimes having a title of "exception" and sometimes having a title
of "debugging mode"(this is not a blue screen)
while sometimes when I turn off the machine and power it on again(not
ctrl+alt+del nor pressing reset). I would able to enter the normal
"safe mode screen". however as i can't install windows, my problem
cannot be solved.
one time when i start the system, the power LED went off and harddisk
LED went on. the system cannot be booted. I re-checked the connecting
wire and it should be fine. I have tried to plug power LED into
harddisk LED socket and plug harddisk one into the power LED socket,
both of two LED went off, so I suspect the power LED socket have
broken down too.
the problem is:
1) the LEDs should not be able to affact the booting, but why it turn
out seens to be affacting?
2) what is that screen of numbers? why it happens?
3) how to solve my problem? is my ABIT va-20 broken down now? if yes i
will be able to replace it from the shop.
additional information about my system:
a GTR 310W power supply
athlon 1.2G CPU without overclocking
grandmars radeon 9250 display card
256MB ram (133 FSB)
80G 7200rpm ATA100 harddisk >> Stay informed about: A very strange problem |

Your new motherboard has onboard video. Temporarily connect the monitor
cable to the onboard outlet instead of the Radeon connection. You will then
see the boot screen where you can go into and disable the onboard video.
After you have disabled the onboard video you shut the computer off,
reconnect the monitor cable to the Radeon then boot up. You should now see
the screen.

With the 3 hole female to 2 pin socket, just cut the 3 hole female plug in
half and then turn sideways onto pins.
cheers

I don't think that is the source of the problem as I have tried to see
the screen with the Radeon connection

Exactly. Did you remember to disable the onboard video BEFORE trying to
boot via the Radeon? Or set the booting order / primary video / whatever
it is on this motherboard so that your add-on card is the primary one /
booting one /whatever one? As default, the onboard video is used (except
for some certain boards, e.g. i815 based ones).
Your old motherboard, what was its chipset? If it is totally
incompatible compared to your new mobo then it would be a wonder if you
could boot & load Windows error-free.
