Hello everyone

Here's one I haven't seen before...

Thompson Speedtouch (wireless) router (a 585 if memory serves)
Dell PC
Tiny Laptop

When connected by cable (for setup etc) they both work beautifully. When
the cable is removed, laptop eventually finds the network and displays the
speed with which packets are being sent and received in the properties
window. However, this is very very slow, 15 -20 minutes for 200 packets to
be sent is an example. I removed all networking bits and pieces, removed
all AOL (arggghhh!) software and the drivers for the router, and reinstalled
careful. Same result, the laptop sees the wireless connection, very slow
speed. It will not connect to anything either - I tried google, the BBC
etc. using Internet Exploder, but it never connected. The AOL connection
would not complete either, and while I usually regard this as a success, the
lady wasn't too impressed.

All firewall software disabled. If anyone can shed some light on this I'd
be very pleased. Tiny Support say the computer is OK and all I am left with
is a fault in the software from AOL or a fault in the router wireless
operation. The router was supplied by AOL as part of a package.

Many thanks for your help.

Is the laptop right next to the router? Poor signal stength
is a common problem. Routers don't need drivers, out-of box
it should be picked up by windows due to a DHCP feature...
at least any normal/modern router would be, but AOL seems to
go to lengths to complicate things, what make/model of
router is it and does it use normal or aol branded firmware?

Thanks for the reply.

It is a Thomson Speedtouch 546 (I think the model number is correct, not the
one above, the router itself isn't here). I have no idea about the firmware
I'm afraid. I didn't think to look it up.

It was positioned next to the router. It was picked up by windows but would
not operate by connecting to the internet. The router was listed in the
'available networks' window, it just would not connect.

hth

Would not connect to what? Router wouldn't connect the
wireless client to the internet or the wireless client
wouldn't connect to the router? Please be more clear with
your answers... remembering that we can't see what's going
on.

Yeah, sorry, I'm a novice at this, pretty much (though it did say above the
laptop would not connect to the internet).

I could not make the connection to the internet, either using Internet
Explorer or AOL unless the router was directly connected by cable to the
laptop. Everything else seemed to be working properly, the network was
listed in the 'available networks' window, it was just not connecting to the
internet.

Thanks again

Still sounds like a signal stregth problem. Try other
channels (setting on router), many default to a middle
channel so try each end channel particularly.

Some routers may do better than others but I would tend to
suspect the laptop more. Does it pick up wifi ok at any
other 'site (place, office or coffeeshop or ??) ?

I did change the channel once, but as it made no difference I stopped there.
I shall try the rest when I get back to it.

It is being tested tomorrow in another environment, I hope to see results by
early afternoon. Thanks for your help so far, I will post the results of my
labours.
