Hi all,
I just got a new computer that came with a flat panel LCD monitor. Both
the computer and the monitor work great except that there's a bad pixel
(stuck on, blue) on the monitor. The problem is not bad for normal use,
but when you watch DVDs on the computer, the stuck pixel shows and it's
a little annoying. I have the option of returning the computer for a
refund or exchange, but I would like to know the opinions of others
before deciding what to do.
My questions:
Would you put up with bad pixels (stuck-on or -off) on a new LCD
monitor? What is your tolerance level?
Does anyone know what percentage of LCD monitors have no pixels? (This
obviously can vary from one manufacturer to the next. I'm just looking
for a typical, ballpark figure.)
Please share your opinion and knowledge.
Thanks. >> Stay informed about: Q: Would you tolerate bad pixels on LCD monitors? |

I would definitely exchange it for another one. You paid for a 100% new work
computer.

/PC World/ says it's to be expected. If you negotiated return
privileges as part of the purchase, return it but don't be too
surprised if the next one also has a problem.

Heh, this reminds me of my first laptop purchase; a Sony Vaio costing around
£1500. When I got it home it had 2 bad pixels (one black the other white). I
was told that Sony would not recognise this as a fault unless 10% of the
pixels were bad!
After a huge argument with the store manager and a little assistance from
the finance company I was able to exchange it for a new machine.
Anyway to answer your question - I would exchange it ASAP.

That's a fascinating argument. I suppose it would be all right if you'd paid for
the computer with cash and only 10% of the bills were counterfeit...

That's BULLSHIT! Either you were lied to, or you're making this up.
This would mean about 80,000 bad pixels on a low-resolution (1024 x
768) LCD. Typically policies in the industry is to allow about 5-10
bad pixels.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Q: Would you tolerate bad pixels on LCD monitors? |

I've only owned two LCDs: a 15" Sony and a new 19" Dell (Samsung
192T). Neither of them had any bad pixels. If they had one or two, I
might've tried to tolerate them, especially if I couldn't return the
monitor. By the way, manufacturers typically would not replace a panel
unless it has more than 5-10 bad pixels.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Q: Would you tolerate bad pixels on LCD monitors? |

0% tolerance. I've seen a "fading" effect on a few pixels (in line) on my
Hitachi, barely visible in a dark room with totally black screen, and I'm
considering to exchange the monitor for that. I can always "create" some
real bad pixels... *cough*

I think it varies greatly. On some "no-name" brands I've seen ~10 subpixels
broken on each monitor. I think the ballpark figure is near to 1 (one) dead
pixel. On the "quality" brands such as Hitachi and Samsung I havn't seen a
single dead pixel (on the few monitors I have thoroughly examined), although
I've heard reports of dead pixels on Samsungs.
Of course, I'm talking dead pixels "from factory".

Thats what I was told from the manager of PCWorld in East
Kilbride.Apparently there have to be 10% failed or the failed pixels must be
in a prominent position. He said he would not be able to return the laptop
to Sony as they didnt see it as a fault. I did indeed see the very machine
in their Manaers special line a few days later with £100 off.
I did say that this is what I was told & I did not follow it up as I got a
new machine. Strange that you got so upset.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Q: Would you tolerate bad pixels on LCD monitors? |

Could it be that you misremebered what the manager told you (say
confusing 10 pixels with 10%)? (Of course it is possible that the
manager misspoke).<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Q: Would you tolerate bad pixels on LCD monitors? |

It's just because no-one with even half a brain would repeat such a
stupid statement, or believe it. Common, if your car's wheel fell off,
would you believe it if a car dealership told you that they would
repair your car only if TWO wheels fell off? The statement about 10%
sounds just as ludicrous.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Q: Would you tolerate bad pixels on LCD monitors? |

Welcome to the wonderful world of computer retailing. The difference
between a computer salesman and a used car salesman is that the used car
salesman _knows_ when he is lying.

Different manufacturers have different policies. Only way to know for
sure is to read the warranty.
Before you do anything else though, thump each of the stuck pixels with
your middle finger in a kind of "snapping your fingers" movement
tensioning the finger against the thumb before the snap. May clear them
all right up.
