is there a way to reenable the *hidden* 256kB part of L2 ? (with all the
athlon/duron resurrections going on...)
the same thing with SMP in mind -?

I doubt it. The last known time Intel let an 'oops' slip by with a 'disabled'
function was SMP on the PPGA celerons. Past that I think they have a clean record.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

....Until motherboard manufacturers found that, despite Intel's claims, it
was possible to enable PAT on the 865PE chipset, making it just as fast as
the more expensive 875P. Wink

You're right though, the SMP on the Celerons was the last time a disabled
feature in a CPU could be re-activated.

Having said that, I once had a non-HT P4 processor running properly in
Hyperthreaded mode. The annoying thing is that this happened completely by
accident and I have been unable to do it again since. The fact that it
worked once though shows that it's possible, and it's something I would have
devoted some time to if Intel hadn't subsequently extended HT throughout the
processor range.

I'm reluctant to draw conclusions from un-reproducible, one-time, occurrences
due to the problem of confirming that the observation was, in fact, what one
thought they observed.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
