unable to connect DSL to router WAN port - error 678.

Philip, thank you for your advise.

OK. I tried but did not work. Actually the phone line plug that goes into
the DSL modem is smaller (6 pins) and the WAN socket is bigger (8 pins).
Anyway, I plug it in. I am unable to login, error message: 678, remote
computer did not response.

The Airlink 4 port 10/199mbps Internet Broadband Router manual:

xDSL Modem --> WAN Port (Internet Broadband Router)

WAN: an RJ-45 10/100mbps Auto-MDIX port for the WAN that will fit the
xDSL/Cable modem's specification need.
LAN: four RJ-45 10/100mbps Auto-MDIX ports for connecting to either 10Mbps
or 100mbps Ethernet connections.

My question is in XP is there any setting requires me to set up for WAN
port? Thank you.

Ok,..then use it that way then. I never heard of Airlink,..I don't use any
kind "DSL Router", so my knowlwedge of them is only "in general".

The LAN Connection settings should be set to get the Address and the Config
"automatically". All your machines should be plugged into the 4 RJ-45 ports
on the Router.

If it still doesn't work then contact Airlink (or the ISP) so they can
troubleshoot it. That Router could have had its brains blown out by
lightning for all we know.

Many SOHO routers will only allow one VPN connection to be made
through them. This is probably where the problem is.

Bill, much thanks for your advise.
Are you saying I have the wrong kind of router?
This may make sense? But I can do exactly the same thing with my hub -
connecting to DSL one computer at a time, but never at the same time.
How and where can I find out for sure?

The AirLink+ Internet Broadband router
1 WAN + 4 LAN
Could this be defective? Should I return this to Fries and exchange another
model?

Bill, my Win XP Pro does not have VPN set up?

Should I set up this Virtual Private Network? I do not have plans to network
the two computers together. I only wish both computers to be able to acess
the Internet at the same time?

Also, after I ran ipconfig, using DSL modem and NIC to the same LAN ports
(no WAN) it shows:
Windows IP Configuration:
IP Routing enable --- no
PPP Adapter DSL connection
DHCP enable ------ no

Do these need to be enabled? How do I enable it? Thank you.

Then VPN doesn't have anything to do with this. Forget VPN.

OK, OK, OK, I got it working after 2 days of trying everything.

I have to set up the router with DSL service's user name and password.

But I was having problem to able to configure the router. I was not able to
open URL http://192.168.1.1/ in IE (Netscape will not do). Somehow, when I
connected the DSL modem output to LAN port and got online. I was able to
configure the router.
