Thats a very poor way of installing a larger drive.

Because of the way you installed the larger drive.

Use a better approach of cloning the original drive to the new one.

Use something like True Image to clone the drive and
have it expand the original partition to fill the new drive.

Doesnt stop him cloning the original drive to the new one using something like True Image.

OK, then he can just image the current config on
the new drive and restore it to the new drive again.

Did you check the jumpers on the Maxtor? Sounds like it is jumpered to
limit its capacity to 32GB.

Install Partitionmagic (it's not free, but a working version should be
available from somewhere).

The unallocated space clearly has not been formated and therefore cannot be
seen by the operating system. Partionmagic will be able to format this space
and then merge the two partions togehter to make one.
