If the hard drive is dead, how do I get important information off of
it? There are things on there that are crucial. Thanks in advance

You don't... If it was THAT critical you'd have backups.

You could send it to a recovery service but that's expensive ($1000+)

"Dead" has varying degrees when it comes to hard drives. Not reading,
not spinning, reading errors and so on mean that it is possible to make
a dead drive alive, at least temporarily. If the platter is truly FUBR,
then the expensive recovery that Noozer mentioned may be the only answer.

I would give the drive to a friend who has some knowledge of computers
and he might be able to help.

Yes Backup-Backup-Backup
I had a HD that died and was making a clinking sound. I didn't have backups
either but the drive became alive again for long enough to transfer my files
to a new drive. I know that sinking, end of the world feeling. I know I
won't get that luck again because HD's usually die hard and fast. I bought
an external 120GB USB HD to do backups with and backup weekly or more. Not
trying to rub it in, just sharing my experience (and luck). -Tom
