"Dead" has varying degrees when it comes to hard drives. Not reading,
not spinning, reading errors and so on mean that it is possible to make
a dead drive alive, at least temporarily. If the platter is truly FUBR,
then the expensive recovery that Noozer mentioned may be the only answer.

I would give the drive to a friend who has some knowledge of computers
and he might be able to help.

Yes Backup-Backup-Backup
I had a HD that died and was making a clinking sound. I didn't have backups
either but the drive became alive again for long enough to transfer my files
to a new drive. I know that sinking, end of the world feeling. I know I
won't get that luck again because HD's usually die hard and fast. I bought
an external 120GB USB HD to do backups with and backup weekly or more. Not
trying to rub it in, just sharing my experience (and luck). -Tom
