Hi,
What is the best way to unplug the IDE and floppy cables from the
motherboard without damaging them? In the past I've always had replacement
cables to use so I just pulled on the ribbon cable itself, but this time I
need to reuse the cables. I'm concerned that pulling on the ribbon cable
will damage the connector, but I'm not sure what the best alternative would
be?

Thanks,
BGC

With your teeth. That way you can feel the amount of tension better. You
want to use just the right amount of tension so as not to pull the
plastic bit out of the cable bit.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Hi BGC -

I look for cables with little pull "tabbies" on the ends. Makes pulling 'em
up as easy as pulling up my shorts.

............or down, when in a hurry....... I haven't seen any shorts

If you are going to be yanking the cable often, you should get the ones =
that have the pull tabs on them. Otherwise, and if there is room for =
you fingers, you might be able to grab the connector on the ribbon cable =
on the sides and rock it upward (but don't rock too far an angle since =
you don't want to bend the pins). Some (probably most) connectors have =
a strain guard; the ribbon cable goes into the teeth and the crimp top =
is pinched down on the ribbon cable, the cable is folded back over the =
crimp top, and a strain guard is pushed on, so the cable folds back over =
connector. That way an pulling on the cable will pull on the strain =
guard instead of on the crimp top and possible ruin the connections. If =
the strain guard is missing, the maker really cheaped out or it has =
already been broken off from abuse. Use both hands to avoid twisting =
the ribbon cable or pulling more on the outside wires than the middle.

Don't get this one (http://snipurl.com/5eah) with has the ribbon cable =
come straight out with no strain guard; you probably cannot pull on its =
sides since it is mostly all pushed within the receiver shell. Get this =
one (http://snipurl.com/5eaq) where the ribbon cable folds back under a =
strain guard; you can pull on the strain guard (if you have tiny fingers =
and strong nails), pull on its sides, or gently pull with two hands on =
the cable. Or better yet get this one (http://snipurl.com/5eaj) with =
pull tab pulls on the strain guard. These examples were only to show =
the connectors. I don't recommend going over 18 inches in length (the =
max length specified in parallel ATA specs), and you don't need to =
bother with shielded round cables unless you are in an industrial or =
otherwise highly EMF or RF noisy environment.

In my experience they're pretty solid and can stand up to quite a lot of
abuse.....just pull 'em off!

I bought a rounded IDE cable with the pull tabs and one of the tabs
broke right off when I reefed on it. Took it back for a refund. Should
have used my teeth.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I agree. But again, if the strain guard is missing, or broken, be a little
careful, and do so slowly. Also never pull on the cable with your nails, use
only thumb and pointer finger, but never nails, as that might peel off the
isolation.

Hi BGC,
Wiggle *very* slightly to prevent bent pins. Not up and down but side to
side. Once you get a little movement you're on your way. If that wiggle
doesn't work use the cable and wiggle but grasp it (close to the strain
relief) so that you're distributing the load as evenly as possible. The
strain relief should prevent any damage. It may be possible to insert a
small knife blade in one end and pry one end very gently until you have the
barest amount of movement -then go to the other end (assisted wiggle
technique Smile) unplug the power cord and wait for 20' to insure that you
don't short anything. Good luck -

Just need to be firm but gentle...c'mon Baby that it....oh yeah Wink

Funnily enough I just read someone's problem where they broke of an HDD pin
when putting a cable back on.
I also had the strange experience of an IDE connector coming off the mobo.
The connector was pretty firm to push on and then one day after about 12
months, pc stopped responding, though something had died, but the connector
just seems to have squeezed itself off of the pins (it didn't fall of
completely, just pushed out enough to lose contact). Hadn't moved the pc or
fished around inside it for ages.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
