If you are going to be yanking the cable often, you should get the ones =
that have the pull tabs on them. Otherwise, and if there is room for =
you fingers, you might be able to grab the connector on the ribbon cable =
on the sides and rock it upward (but don't rock too far an angle since =
you don't want to bend the pins). Some (probably most) connectors have =
a strain guard; the ribbon cable goes into the teeth and the crimp top =
is pinched down on the ribbon cable, the cable is folded back over the =
crimp top, and a strain guard is pushed on, so the cable folds back over =
connector. That way an pulling on the cable will pull on the strain =
guard instead of on the crimp top and possible ruin the connections. If =
the strain guard is missing, the maker really cheaped out or it has =
already been broken off from abuse. Use both hands to avoid twisting =
the ribbon cable or pulling more on the outside wires than the middle.
Don't get this one (http://snipurl.com/5eah) with has the ribbon cable =
come straight out with no strain guard; you probably cannot pull on its =
sides since it is mostly all pushed within the receiver shell. Get this =
one (http://snipurl.com/5eaq) where the ribbon cable folds back under a =
strain guard; you can pull on the strain guard (if you have tiny fingers =
and strong nails), pull on its sides, or gently pull with two hands on =
the cable. Or better yet get this one (http://snipurl.com/5eaj) with =
pull tab pulls on the strain guard. These examples were only to show =
the connectors. I don't recommend going over 18 inches in length (the =
max length specified in parallel ATA specs), and you don't need to =
bother with shielded round cables unless you are in an industrial or =
otherwise highly EMF or RF noisy environment.
