Running an HP with AMD 1.4GHz Athlon Socket A with 200fsb. I was told by HP
support that I could upgrade to an AMD 2GHz Athlon but they are unable to
provide a part number for me??? I have only been able to find XP or MP
models on the 'net and don't know if they are even what I'm looking for. I
don't want to change boards, just a simple change of CPU's to help with
graphics programs. Already maxxed out with 512mb RAM. Any help would be
appreciated. Thank you, Steve T.

Even an HP model number would help. For info that will apply, see link
below. Come back with HP model number or the chipset the MB uses and we
could make a better recommendation. One thing is for sure, you have more
options than you think.

Thanks Wes. The HP model number is a Pavillion XT983 with chipset VIA KL
133. RAM speed is PC133 (runs at PC 100). Steve T.

OK, The KLE133 chipset supports a 133MHz FSB just like the KT133A, so you
should be able to run any Athlon XP /266 model in it There's probably
nothing in the bios that allows any changes, so I would think your best
bet would be a 2400+ XP. It should run at full speed which is 15x133
(2000MHz). If you want more than that, you'll probably need to go to an MP
/266 model, or you may still find a 2600+/266 model. you should also be
able to run an old 133Mhz Tbird. But with HP, I wouldn't promise anything.

Thanks Wes, big help! I presume that the correct way to purchase would be
with a matching fan/heat sink. Is there a special install procedure with
thermal paste and ??? Never worked with an AMD CPU before. Are you saying
that my current BIOS should be OK? Thanks for all the info, Steve T.

the stock cpu coolers that come with the XP cpu's aren't very good, so I'd
buy an oem cpu and a seperate cooler. TR2-M1 is a good quiet cheap one and
lots better than the stock cooler. The X's don't have a case top, so care
needs to be taken installing the cooler, but the TR2-M1 installs pretty
easy. Bios shouldn't matter. it may or may not give you the actual cpu
model on post. If not don't worry about. The one below just says unknown
cpu at 2400MHz.Smile

AMD Athlon 3000 / 400 Mhz FSB - Hi folks, When looking for a Processor, I found that AMD offers a 3 year warantee on 3200/400 and 3000/333 but not the 3000/400. The 3000/400 is also not sold in a retail box, and dealers seem to give ~ 30 day warantee for them. Any clues ?..

Athlon 64 3200+ - Have ordered a rather elaborate system (locally-built) around this chip (w/Gigabyte nForce 3 board). Has anyone any experience with similar setup yet? Thanks in advance.
