Post subject: upgrading to a gigabyte board - a few queries
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>giga-byte (more info?)

I'm ditching my Abit KT7-Raid and 1.1GHz TB and thinking of going for a
Gigabyte GA-7N400-L1 and a 2500+ Athlon XP (333MHz Barton core) with PC2700
RAM as it's a reasonably priced combination. I just have a few questions
before I get the credit card out;

1. Does anyone have any comments, good or bad, about the GA-7N400-L1?

2. Is a 400MHz Athlon/PC3200 RAM combination worth the difference in price?

3. Is it worth buying PC3200 RAM anyway (with the 333MHz Athlon)? Could I
run it at 400MHz and would that be desirable ( I believe the FSB & RAM are
better to be in synch)? Would PC3200 RAM running at PC2700 speeds overclock
better?

4. Would 2 sticks have RAM have to be the same model/brand to be used Dual
Channel?

5. It's not just PC3200 RAM that can be used in Dual Channel mode is it?

6. Is RAM in Dual Channel mode noticeably quicker?

Many thanks for any thoughts on any of the above.

TIA
Iain

stay away from giga-byte, my ga-8pe667 ultra which im trying to rma and i
emailed there tech support over dozen without a single email back, this is
straight from a reseller in town gb has the worst rma next to ECS and MSI..
my advice is get a abit nf7-s v2 its cheaper and has all the things ur
looking for and more.

I certainly haven't got $$$$$$ to burn (or ££££££££ for that matter) - I
couldn't afford the 3200+ but I just wondered if the diference in FSB/RAM
speed was marked. You mentioned about overclocking the 2500+ - how would
you? I used the pencil trick to unlock my 1.1GHz TBird. I believe some mobos
unlock the multipliers automatically - is the GA-7N400 one of them? Seems
unbelievable!

You reckon it wouldn't be worth buying PC3200 RAM - wouldn't it take more
overclocking? I was looking at Crucial RAM - I hear good and bad things
about it.
