iv just got an ol computer, which was second hand,
iv recently learned that you can get different speed pci/agp slot
thingys
anyway, does this mean i cant
1 upgrade to a faster graphics card and
2 put a pci card in for usb 2 connections
i dont wanna go spending the money if its not going to work as well as
it should >> Stay informed about: can i get usb2? |

What model of motherboard and what current graphics is it using now?
How about listing all the hardware?
Yes, you can add a PCI USB-2 card.

What does 'ol computer' mean exactly?
Same question about the rest of your post; what does it mean, exactly?
You can't get exact answers with out giving more information in the
question.
Right now, with your post as it is, the only answer is "It depends." If you
have PCI slots, you can certainly add USB 2.0 ports with a card. If you
have an AGP slot, the AGP cards you can use depend on what specifications
the motherboard meets. Whether either one is worth doing depends. The
operating system also may make a difference.
As far as 'going to work as well as it should', that depends on what you
will do with the system.
Try again with more specific information, capital letters, and punctuation.

"ol computer" means old computer which means i missed out the d when i
was typing fast
anyways, i shall have a look at what themotherboard is, my main concern
was that that if i went and got a usb2 card and put it in will it be
usb2 speed, or will it only be able to run at usb1 becuase of the
motherboard speed
the graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce 4MX 440
i wont be able to do anything with the pc for afew weeks but i would
like to know for wen i get it back >> Stay informed about: can i get usb2? |

If that is the video card that came with the computer originally, and if you
have spare PCI slots a USB2 card should work just fine. If it is an AGP vs.
a PCI video card, then you should be able to upgrade your video card at
least up to the FX 5900 series and probably even more depending on the MB
and type (and voltage) of the AGP slot. (this will also apply to the same
generation of ATI cards)

By asking what an 'old computer' meant, I was asking HOW old (best
determined by what CPU, what speed CPU, how much RAM, does it have an AGP
slot, and what video card does it now have?)
If you have a free PCI slot then you can use a USB 2 adapter card and get
USB 2 performance. Very old Windows operating systems will need a patch to
provide USB operation.
As Ed Medlin stated, there are a number of older display adapters that can
replace your nVidia GeForce 4MX 440 and give much better performance.

ill give you more information later as i will be opening it up anyway
to prepare it for transport
comparing it to another computer i have around i would say its at least
5 years old, >> Stay informed about: can i get usb2? |

That would be an XP 2000+ processor. Not a bad performer for it's day and
good for most of today's apps and games. That would have been made very
close to the timeframe that USB 2.0 was appearing on some motherboards, so
make sure you do not have it already. If not, a PCI board will work fine.

That was my thought also. (Although, if it's a Palamino core then USB2 was
still an optional extra when it came out) Not only that but I'm fairly sure
that by the time GF4-MX440's were around USB2 was common on most boards.
However the graphics card may have been a later addition.

I had one in an Asus MB a few years ago. I can't remember the model, only
that it used the AMD northbridge if I am not mistaken. It did have USB 2.0
because I remember I bought my first USB 2 external drive enclosure when I
built the system. I believe that 2 ports were USB 2.0 and 2 were 1.xx ports.
My memory is not really that great since I have built quite a few since
then..... . (excuse for old age) I had a GF4 4800 in mine and the MX
series came along a bit later as a budget card. I do know that the USB 2.0
ports operated as 1.xx ports until the USB 2 drivers were installed from the
CD. The OP may try installing them once he identifies his board and gets the
drivers from the manufacturers site.....who knows? He might get lucky. I am
fairly sure the processor was a Palomino core because I did the rear window
defroster repair kit trick on the processor to unlock it and it ran (and
posted) as a 2200+. It was a tough one to keep cool though.
