vga cable extension results in signal loss

I am trying to connect a dell Inspiron 9100 laptop to an apple studio
display. Directly connecting the two results in success, or a display on
the external apple studio display. However, I want to extend the vga
cable between the two. So I have a male-male vga cable. I put a F-F
gender changer on one end and thought to extend the vga cable. But when
I connect up this extension, the studio display says no signal detected.

Have I lost too much of something (voltage, clarity) through the
extension? What is the problem here? If I splice the cable together
manually, would this help (soldering)? Is there a quality difference in
different gender changers that could be the problem?

Sounds like all the connections are not there - like maybe the "shell
ground" is not carried through by the GA. For it to work, you have to
assure all pins connect through the GA, and, most likely, that the shell
ground is also carried through - either actually, or artificially. Different
systems tend to use various methods to detect if a monitor is connected,
and whatever yours uses is lost going through the GA.
